I believe I have a unique take on this. My contention is that men do indeed like the more voluptuous curvaceous woman. Unfortunately, women themselves have been poor stewards of their bodies with the increasingly high fat diets and lack of commitment to losing weight after childbirth by women over the years.
There is a fine line between voluptuous and outright fat and unfortunately the increasingly fatty diets eventually push these one-time voluptuous women over the line into fatdom and men detest that. Men really can't say anything about it either for fear of being cut off in the bedroom and creating general marital strife.
In order to preempt that eventuality, men have accordingly chosen more slender women to mate with over the years. This selection strategy by men allows these more slender women to blossom through childbirth and the increasingly fatty diets into the voluptuous women that men prefer.
So the truth is that men's tastes have not really changed, their desire to avoid conflict and get laid remains a constant. They have just gotten more intelligent about how to obtain that state of nirvana. Pretty simple.

increasingly high fat diets Actually, fat isn't what makes people fat. Carbohydrates plus genetic susceptibilty makes people fat. The fat content of the American diet has been dropping for a couple of decades, and yet obesity is now at an all time high -- it doesn't take a rocket scientist (hee hee) to figure out that the "eat fat = get fat" correlation just isn't true.
The whole "lowfat/high complex carb" diet push has been a complete fraud -- as I learned the hard way. I kept gaining and gaining, even though I was a serious runner at the time (and that's not supposed to happen.) How I WISH I could undo the damage it did to my body, and get my old physique back! But, at least, by limiting carbs I can prevent it from getting any worse.
and lack of commitment to losing weight after childbirth by women over the years.
Part of this is due to lack of breast feeding. Fat storage during pregnancy is designed to prepare for feeding baby. Without breastfeeding, it may be nearly impossible to take off that weight.

No, there's not. A woman with the right musclo-skeletal structure can be extremely voluptuous, and yet very lean.

I was referring to those men who place emphasis on looks..... Most of those who've tried a nicely frosted cake know that the icing is not the best part...or there'd be no call for cakes, just bowls of icing and spoons.
But there are probably as many little kids who would gladly dig into a bowl filled with such a treat as there are guys who look only at the outside of a possible feminine analogue to their personality. When the gods are feeling particularly malevolent, they arrange for two with similar beliefs to meet.

Italian Woman = Sultry! While they can be, generally I find them too high maintenance for my taste.
We are? How so? Besides, have you ever been fed better than by an Italian?

There is something glaring that stands out about that glamour gals of yesteryear and the current ones.
Loren, Gardner, Kelly, Hepburn, Russell, and the others had CLASS. They were feminine, they were ladies, and they didn't need to get naked and be trashy to be considered desirable. Class. What a concept.

Actually, fat isn't what makes people fat.The mode of expanded girth is not the issue, it is a fact that has befallen our society over the past few decades. Whether it's a lack of exercise or the alighnment of the planets is not important. People are fatter and thus women are fatter.
My theory of preemptive selection of a slender mate remains a good explanation for the observed selection trend among men and at the very least represents my selection strategy.

I still believe that even an extremely voluptuous woman with right musclo-skeletal structure is more susceptible to becoming fat than a genetically thin woman and I would bet dollars to donuts that any data would bare that out.
