Did anyone see Brit's show Wed nite? The last 10 minutes showed a LIVE cutaway to Rummy and Gen. Myers answering questions after emerging from a long meeting with Senators. Rummy looked drained and cowed and deferred most of the questions to Myers. He was a totally different man from the one who reigned supreme over press conferences since 9/11. I despise Wesley Clark, who butchered 4,000 Serb civilians in support of the gangster Kosovars. But McCaffrey is straight up and if sources are correct Rummy may be getting quite an earful in the halls of power.

You might wonder why Gen. McCaffrey--like Gen. Wesley Clark and several others--seem to be shilling for the Dems who oppose the war.

A pal of mine, who was a Navy officer at the time, told me about how the entire staff of the European command he served in was summoned on short notice for an urgent briefing one day in 1996. Seems like some bigshot White House general was coming to get everyone straightened out about life. My pal glanced at his classified files, threw them in the safe, straightened his tie, and went into the briefing room.

Forty-five minutes late, Gen. Barry McCaffrey walked in, and not to do business with the staff. McCaffrey took the occasion to lecture them roundly and soundly about how the kiddie corral that made up the Clinton White House were the best and brightest ever, and how the assembled officers should be proud to serve under such a president.

McCaffrey--once Clinton's drug czar--had been seduced, and remains so. His judgment, like Clark's (who wants to be the Dem candidate for president), is entirely suspect.

Rummy is responsible for the lives of about 400,000 people, and he has clymers like McAssrey and Clark, two perfumed prince generals who fawned and suckled under the Clintoon attacking him from the Clintoon News Network. No wonder he is tired. He has to do what is best in the war over there and remove the knives from his back planted by Clark and McAssrey from the Clintoon News Network.

Now ... that's funny!

The halls of power are Mr. Rumsfeld walking with his boss, George W. Bush.

Bush approved the strategic plan and authorized it's start. Rumsfeld is the civilian supervisor of the day to day issues. General Meyers and Joint Chiefs get any inter-service conflicts, problems and issues coordinated and solved.

Tommy Franks and his CENTCOMM command execute the battle plan. Without meddling. They move the pieces around the board. They decide the timeline and the tactics. They are the best in the world, they will do what it takes to complete their mission objective successfully.

The politicians need to kick the Military officers in the butt, because their nature is to want one more day, one more asset, one more piece of info and one more chance to plan contingencies. Forever. As they should, they know the risks and their rewards are military, not political. Once they are kick started, these guys go into a groove, ply their trade, and direct the most powerful and agile military organization in World History. They are the best of the best in their profession, directing the best skilled warriors weilding the best weaponry and supported by the best logistic and technological assets ever.

How do I know? I watched "McHale's Navy."

Rummy advises the President on the timing, scale and objectives of the mission, is the civilian contact and manager of their day to day activities, and is the public liason to the Pentagon Press Corps/Day Care Toddlers and the barely sober Democrat Senate vagrants and ugly House howler monkeys.
