Generally speaking, talking to the police if there's even a chance you might be a suspect is a bad idea. Getting a lawyer might make the police suspicious. However, the only person you need to be worried about is the DA, since he's the only one who can help you, rather than hurt you (things you say to the police can only hurt you), and getting a lawyer can't hurt you with a DA.

You're right - the liers damage the system. Lineups always include people that couldn't possibly have committed the crime in question. A rape accuser once identified a cop that was on duty at the time of the rape as her attacker - and when she was told this, her response was "Well, he's a man!"
