The Truth Behind The Badjoe Blowup

Earlier, Jim posted a thread to the forum titled VANITY: The "Truth" about JimRob and Free Republic according to BADJOE . During the course of the thread, I decided that I would take of the proverbial mask and tell my story:

You won't have to wait too much longer. As a matter of fact, I can fill you in on most of it. You see, I am at the core of much of it.

Shortly after 9/11, I got a freepmail from some account called "Lead Moderator". The mail asked if I would be willing to help the forum out as a volunteer. The mail said that if I agreed, he would reveal himself to me and I would laugh because it was someone I had a friendship with.

I agreed. And it was someone I had a friendship with; someone I had exchanged mails with several times over activism issues. He asked me to join the moderating crew.

And so it began.

Lead Moderator (LM from now on) set the lead, along with Jim. There were several others. I was the newbie, and was given the "Sidebar Moderator" designation.

After several months, Jim and LM promoted me to Admin Moderator (there are several Admin Moderators).

I have seen some posts by Joe, where he says that LM never wanted me to be a moderator, that he objected to it from the start. That does not jibe with what I saw, including several times where LM went out of his way to not only back me up on some decisions, but go much further. It does not jibe with the many discussions LM and I had, both before and after I became a moderator. But Joe says LM told him it, so I guess it comes down to if you believe Joe at what he claims or not, since LM is not around any longer.

Through some circumstances, Jim invited Joe to be able to view the moderators' discussion boards (we call them the AR boards for "abuse reports" boards).

Joe became quite upset one day when I pulled an article from a website called "Strike-the-root.com", a website for anarchism. We argued over if anarchism was leftist or not, with Joe taking the position that the founding fathers were anarchists.

Jim decided that he didn't want anarchism to be promoted on Free Republic.

Joe then decided that he was going to try to force changes. He revealed my onscreen name, as well as one other moderator's name. He told Jim he wanted us gone, or else. He made lots of threats. He continues to make lots of threats.

He also said several things which turned out to not be quite true. He told Jim that other current moderators had mailed him saying they agreed with him. All of the other current moderators denied doing so. Joe has subsequently said that unless they back him up, Joe will reveal their Freeper identities. Now his threat is unless I was removed, and one other moderator removed, and the stuff you see posted every day on Liberty Post but not here (tax evasion schemes, tin foil conspiracy theories, anarchist propaganda) be allowed here, that he would use what prestige he had here to try and destroy the site.

Jim has his opinions of Joe, which he has shared. Everyone else will have to make up their minds as to what to believe. Myself, I used to think like most of those who are expressing a certain amount of admiration for Joe. I now have seen him to be deceptive, to have reprehensible poltical views, and to be someone who actively seeks to do me harm.

When the ordeal went down, I told Jim that I was going to step down. He asked me not to. I went back and forth with it for quite some time. Eventually I decided to kiss my Dales name goodbye.

So here I am. One of the fabled Texas Chainsaw Moderators, which always struck me as a laughable bit of demogoguery, since I tend to be hands-off. I can't remember the last time Jim had to overturn one of my decisions, other than to pull something I left up.

Maybe this website should be used for the promotion of anarchism. I don't know. If so, it wouldn't be a site I would be comfortable being a part of. But the important thing, Jim said he didn't want it to be that, and I acted in concert with those wishes.

First I got you guys involved in that discussion to keep you busy and not out banning Freepers left and right. It worked for about a half a day. : )

Secondly that thread was posted on a moderator board that Freepers could not read.

The arguement was whether anarchy simply means zero government control or bomb throwing socialism as you and MsAntiFeminazi insisted. Jim why don't you post that thread on FR or here and let's see who is telling the truth?

One mod even ask me. on that thread if I thought the Freepers would enjoy the discussion. I said the Libertarians would love it. It was at that ponit JR said he didn't want the discussion on the main forum.

Post it JR and prove me wrong.

I've been accused of lying. So let's see if the facts back Joe up, that he got into the anarchy discussion to keep me busy and not out banning Freepers left and right. And let's put the anarchism thread out there, but in full context.

I will start by posting things from the Abuse Reports (AR) board of the day in question, 6/28/2002. To give some background, at this time there was quite a whispering campaign going on, and many Freepers were jumping ship. Jim, knowing the charges were BS, had invited Joe to oversee the AR boards.

For these, I am going to XXXXX out names, to protect privacy. Not only will this show the context of the allegations Joe is making, it will also give some insight into the way we moderators work. And without further pause, here we go.

These are in reverse order, which I do apologize for, but that is the way the system works. In other words, you'll have to go to the bottom, and then start back up. The posts by moderators will have their number (such as #9, me).

But, more and more children are encountering other children from nontraditional families. Being different has always been a reason to tease amongst children. Race, intelligence, shyness, eyesight, weight is being joined by parental sexuality as reasons to tease. They could have done a show on all these things but they chose homosexual parenting because this is a relatively new phenomenon. With proper discussion, the show could be a real learning experience. The possibility of my child hearing at school that little Johnny is a freak because he has two moms is more of a threat to her well-being than this show was. [Sue the tobacco companies! If it weren't true, Clinton would have just come out with evidence to the contrary. His only recourse was some sort of punishment. While a many may paint her as a liberal from DU, consider what is actually being suggested. Quite a few people here always complain that the DEMs march in lock step, or are having their arms twisted by Daschle, etc. What I see happening here is formalizing the same thing. Mean-spirited or not, intolerant or not, at the very least, it comes off as sounding hypocritical. Mr. Robinson, I am quite conservative and have been part of the Free Republic community for a couple of years now. In fact I attended the Inauguration Freeper Ball in DC. I voted for Bush, was very active in his campaign, marched with other freepers outside the Governor’s Mansion in Austin during the recounts and stood in the rain until 2:00AM on election night in Austin. Along with a couple of other conservatives, I started and moderated the egroups B2K (bush2000) forum, which had nearly 1000 grassroots activist members at one point. I fully support Bush and the Republican party and probably spend at least 30 minutes a day on Free Republic reading and posting. Yet I just tried to post to Free Republic and was unable to, being told this: “Your posting privileges have been revoked. Lib Troll, flame baiter.” I believe one of the admins did this because I posted something in response to a news article with what I feel is a really stupid premise, basically saying that Clinton IS responsible for all the corporate scandals. I feel this IS idiotic and it makes conservatives look petty, like liberals, and it therefore does damage to conservatives. I think most rational people who read that article will agree even if they feel Clinton is a tragedy. I find this treatment rather shocking and insulting. I’ve never had to explain my “conservative credentials” before. Calling me a “lib troll” and “flame baiter” and yanking my post is shameful behavior on your admin’s part; shutting people down and then calling them names is shameful. I just read this part of the Free Republic Registration and User Agreement: “Suitibility of Posts: Free Republic does not edit or censor user posts but does reserve the right to remove what it deems to be (in its own judgement) inappropriate posts or materials.” The admin censored my post. Not because it was inappropriate or immoral but because it expressed a counter-viewpoint. Not one letter of what I wrote was “inappropriate” at all, it was just different and in fact I feel what I wrote was correct and I stand by it: holding Clinton personally responsible for accounting fraud in companies is a stupid position to take. The article reminds me of some of the things Gephardt said about Bush when Enron broke. Please reinstate my posting privileges and pass this message along to whichever admin did this to me. I would like to have a conversation with that person. You might want to check my posting history on Free Republic and the attendance list at the Freeper Ball in DC, to see that the admin has indeed made a mistake. I never thought I would be treated this way on a conservative forum, it’s something more becoming of democraps and is one of the reasons I abandoned that party in 1994. I may not blindly agree with everything I read on Free Republic, but that’s supposed to be a good thing, right? If it’s not too much trouble I would appreciate your help on this. Mornin', all - Thought I'd let y'all know why I've been among the missing the past three days - a long series of electrical storms has been passing thru, one after the other, and it looks like more of the same today. Having lost one computer to "unrepairable" status because of a lightning strike, I tend to err on the side of caution during electrical storms. Sorry, but I'm afraid I just don't have the money to keep buying computers, so when the lightning is flashing all around, I just shut down. Historical reference point: 300 years ago the Indians would hunt and fish in this area, but refused to live anywhere nearby. We're living between two major rivers east of the Mississippi, and it seems to be a magnet area for strange and "wonderful" phenomena. I didn't know that Indian lore before we moved here, or I might have had second thoughts. It took me almost three hours to get logged onto the Internet this morning, and I don't know how long I'll be able to stick around. Frustrating is too mild a word... Mod C

That was a fascinating peek into the Moderators' board, but there is nothing controversial about it. Other than the argument over what anarchism is, it's frankly boring administrative stuff. The Moderators seem like rational, cautious people, nuking a few obvious trolls and previous banned people who keep coming back.

Why BADJOE wants to make a federal case out of this still escapes me.
