Dear Mr. Conant,
I am 40 plus year customer of your fine company, having enjoyed my first bowl of Campbell Chicken Noodle Soup when I was about four or so. While times change and life moves on, one thing that has remained constant is my being a fan of your excellent products from Campbell Soups to Pepperidge Farms breads and cookies, to Prego pasta sauces, and for the women in my family, always Godiva chocolates! Knockwurst and can of Franco American Spaghetti is still a favorite of mine despite
After speaking with my wife and looking through our cabinets and pantry, I conservatively estimate that I spend approximately $800-900 per year on products your company makes, and I can honestly say that it was money well spent. Campbells products represent good value for the dollar.
The reason I like Campbells products is because throughout my life they have always been an honest-to-good-value from an honest-to-good-company, which is why I am somewhat chagrined at having to write this note regarding the recent 60 Minutes II expose on President Bushs military service. As a consumer and Navy Veteran I dont like it when the news reporters become the news stories they report, or when any Honorably Discharged Veteran is treated dishonorably.
I firmly understand that Campbells has no approval over the editorial content of the shows that they sponsor. But you do however, maintain a certain influence with the broadcaster, as well as a responsibility to both your shareholders and customers, that the content and character of the show does not shame the character and integrity of your company or your products. This is exactly what has happened in the case of the 60 Minutes II piece aired last Wednesday evening.
Dan Rathers team defamed a sitting president of the United States, based on rumor and innuendo from interested party partisans, discredited sources and forged documents, ostensibly to effect the outcome of this Novembers election. That is dishonest, un-American, and certainly not worth your good name or my good business. Initially I assumed that CBS would have conducted and internal investigation and reported the appropriate corrections. It has been a week since that broadcast, and while ALL major and minor news outlets are reporting that CBS was duped or something worse, no investigation or correction has occurred.
I am sure that I am not alone in saying that I cannot, and will not, support dishonest shows like 60 Minutes II with my purchases, meager though they may be. And I would certainly like to think that Cambells would not like to have their good name and reputation sullied either.
Thank you for any and all considerations in getting to the bottom of this distasteful affair.
Best regards,
Marked Man
Well stated.

My letter to them was shorter, not sweeter.
That letter was mmm,mmm, good.
