KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A mother has been arrested on charges that she gave crack to her 4-year-old son to "calm him down."

Michelle R. Shelton, 32, of Kansas City, was arrested Thursday on a child endangerment charge. Police said the boy did not suffer any obvious injuries from taking the highly addictive drug. He remains in state custody.

Police first began investigating Shelton a year ago when officers said they saw her escorting drug users into the apartment complex where she and her son lived. Police said some residents at the complex told investigators Shelton sometimes gave the boy crack cocaine to "calm him down."

Social workers were sent to the apartment where they took hair samples from Shelton and her son to test for illegal drugs. The tests came back positive, police said.

According to court records, Shelton told detectives she found empty crack bags and drug paraphernalia throughout her home after parties her son attended. She said it was possible the child found some of the drug.

In a few months the follow up will tell how she was given 6 months probation, parenting classes and has regained custody.

She gave crack - which is cocaine - to her toddler to CALM HIM DOWN.

I don't know how many FReepers have done coke, but in my wild youth, I can tell you coke NEVER calmed down anyone I ever saw.

Cocaine to calm someone down? Mother must be a crackhead to think that.

I am going to tell you something that might shock you. If a person or a child is hyper active a stimulant will have the opposite affect on them.
In other words, it will calm them down.

Isn't Ritalin a form of speed to a non hyper person, but to a person with ADHD it has a calming affect??

Never having been diagnosed with the faux disorder that is ADHD, I have no idea.

Yep...and what you say is correct in that ritalin is a form of amphetamine which has the opposite effect on hyperactive children.

Thank you, that is what I thought but I was not 100% sure about the Ritalin being a type of amphetamine.

Faux my a**. Too bad you can't think for yourself and have to repeat Neal Boortz's mantra.

Anyone who is a parent of a child with ADHD knows it isn't faux. I have three children. Only one has this condition, I suppose I only choose to 'not parent' one, eh?
