Spanish only signs
a certain apartment complex in Nassau County | 5/12/2005 | me

Posted on 05/12/2005 5:53:30 AM PDT by cyborg

I've frequented many illegal immigration threads, yet I've never participated in any serious activism. I'm not that political but I've had enough. I was driving down a main street and noticed a quite large ad for apartment renters in SPANISH ONLY. It really bothered me because I think it's discrimination as anyone who doesn't know spanish won't be able to read the sign. I wrote to the county EOC a very brief note asking what can be done. I do believe in property rights but with the history of racial red lining on Long Island that was as bad as legal segregation was in the South, I think someone had to say something.

Was I wrong for asking? It's mostly a symbolic move since I expect whoever to write me back saying it's their right.

I know spanish, but it should also be in english. Most signs are bilingual around here.

In Lawrence, Massachusetts, not too far from where I grew up, just about every store sign on the main drag is written in Spanish, not English.

I was in the grocery store yesterday & in the cheese aisle there was a display (I think it was put out by Kraft) of recipe booklets. I kept looking at them trying to figure out what they were for - it was all in Spanish, only a tiny line of English at the bottom. The rest was in Spanish - & this is in little old "hicktown" Kentucky. We don't have that many Spanish speaking people here.

I'm not alone then. I think it's ridiculous and it's in your face arrogance.

I would expect that in a bodega. I am not bothered by spanish only signs when I go in a bodega because I know it's owned by spanish speaking people. However, a big apartment complex in a place with a lot of english speakers? Weird.

I was in Miami on business a few years ago and thought I'd drive through "Little Havana" to see what it was like. I thought I'd accidentally crossed over into a bananna republic! Not one single thing was in English, not even the street signs.

That's insane, but largely the government's fault.

Those bi-lingual signs are so tacky looking.

We have one out at Burke Lake that's in 16 languages. Tells folks about "deep water wear a vest".

You know, I graduated from high school in the 70's & my high school counselors THEN told me to take Spanish because it would be spoken as much as English someday. I guess they were right.

It's a little rusty, but here goes - "Como esta usted?"

I guess I better start brushing up.

Several years back we were driving through a really old Czech section in Chicago (on Cermac Avenue). I noticed that the last of the Czech signs had been removed and they'd finally flipped over to English.

Took over a century!

What? Long Island and Massachusetts? I thought only Border States had problems with large populations of Hispanics...

You know, I wouldn't mind it so bad if it were for a large contingent of Spanish speaking people that were here legitimately - but what really galls me is that most of this is directed at ILLEGAL aliens. There is a food company close to here & that is all they have working for them.

Something has to change before it's too late.
