I wish to hell that some of you folks would realize that she was trying to get across the idea that it was not the policy of the U.S. Government to trash the Koran.
That's all she was saying. Money graph:
Mr. Chairman, before I begin my actual testimony, I want to speak directly to Muslims in America and throughout the world. Disrespect for the Holy Koran is not now, nor has it ever been, nor will it ever be, tolerated by the United States. We honor the sacred books of all the world's great religions. Disrespect for the Holy Koran is abhorrent to us all.
She's not giving the Moonbats any special treatment. She's not placing it above the Torah or the Bible (nor would she-as a Christian, she would consider that apostasy).
What, you guys really believe that this fine Christian girl is about to run off and join bin Laden's harem, now? Please lighten up.
Jesus wept! He did! And that's the Word of God!
Be Seeing You,
Chris
"Disrespect for the Holy Koran is not now, nor has it ever been, nor will it ever be, tolerated by the United States. We honor the sacred books of all the world's great religions. Disrespect for the Holy Koran is abhorrent to us all."
I read this over and over again and ask myself why the need to make such a submissive statement in the light of an article that was detracted? Surely the detraction should have been sufficient? (We know that no muslim will believe the detraction anyway, so the apology, the pathetic assurances from Condi sound more like FEAR than a goodwill gesture.) Sometimes, silence really is golden, mouth shut would have made more sense IMO.
First of all and foremost, her comments were made in response to riots.
Secondly, that as Americans, one of the most sacred principles of the United States is "freedom of expression".
As free Americans, we have the right to exercise that freedom and to burn, disrespect, defile, and/or desecrate the Quran for what it stands for without fear.
And the third issue that I brought up is that the Quran is not just a religious book. It is the Constitution of Saudi Arabia and several other countries that prohibit freedom.
Perhaps unwittingly (and as I mentioned - blinded by political correctness) on Dr. Rice's part, she is asking us therefore to "respect" the Constitution of Saudi Arabia.
While I'm not the ultimate Condi fan as you are, section9....you're absolutely right on this one. It seems some here would have her throw fuel on the riot-fire that Newsweek started by saying something statesmen-like such as: "Oh, piss on the Koran." Just what we need in a SOS.....
