The ONE problem

While watching the news for the past few days, I have seen a commerical for a group called the ONE campaign. The goal of this group is to get the American people to rise up and influence our elected leaders to donat one percent of the US budget to ending poverty, hunger, disease and death in Africa. The ONE foundation is supported by Bill Gates, and has such celebrity backers as Bono,Dikembe Mutombo, Michael W. Smith and Michael Stipe.

The ONE campaign wants the US to spend one percent of our budget on aid to Africa. If you look at their website, it sounds like a good idea that will save millions from death and disease. The only problem is that the US and other governments have spent billions try to fix Africa with miserable results, so why would it work now?

I'm pretty sick of foreign aid. Blair, in a speech this morning, apparently (I didn't see it but my wife told me about it) said that terrorist doesn't get them anything and then in the next breath announced some billion dollar figure to go to the PLO.

Redistribution of wealth is a bad idea and will ruin a country, whether you're talking about redistributing that wealth within the nation (welfare, medicare etc) or redistributing it from one nation to another.

Cut them loose and let them sink or swim.

Gee, you'd think with all the good work the UN has done in Africa this would be so unnecessary. Sure, lets throw more money down the rat hole.

Not "billions" but TRILLIONS. The African continent cannot be fixed by pouring untold tons of charity into it. All the developed world is doing is creating a continent of welfare. The tyrants need to be executed or ousted and people taught how to be self sufficient.

It is the ultimate in hipocracy for "decendants of slaves" to claim they want retribution and at the same time claim the US doesn't do enough for Africa. It is nothing but racist Robin Hood, only very little aid and charity make it to those who need it most. All the west has done is prop up tyrants whle nothing in Africa changes. Cut off the entire continent. When the peasants are fed up, maybe they'll arm themselves with pitch forks and understand the term "self determination."
