The New Yorks times confirms that in 2002 Saddam Hussein's "scientists were on the verge of building an atom bomb, as little as a year away:"
Among the dozens of documents in English were Iraqi reports written in the 1990s and in 2002 for United Nations inspectors in charge of making sure Iraq abandoned its unconventional arms programs after the Persian Gulf war. Experts say that at the time, Mr. Husseins scientists were on the verge of building an atom bomb, as little as a year away.
Had the United States not eliminated this threat, today we would be facing a nuclear armed Iraq and possibly a nuclear armed Iran.

AWESOME! Spread this like wildfire. The NYT thinks it's "the October surprise" because they're so full of Bush Derangement Syndrome they think they can spin this any way they want.

It seems like they were referring to the early 1990's was when he was close to having nukes.

Bush Derangement Syndrome. Their take is that when the Bush Administration published these documents captured from Iraq onto a website, that Iran could have taken the documents and learned from Saddam's secret nuclear program. Except the Times forgot - Saddam never had a nuclear program and Iran poses no danger to anyone by pursuing nuclear weapons.

Hey, CP...long time no see.
This is fascinating...but, like another poster, I am curious about why they would run this NOW...
Remember, just days before the 2004 election, they ran that story about the troops not guarding the weapons areas...

In September, the Web site began posting the nuclear documents, and some soon raised concerns. On Sept. 12, it posted a document it called Progress of Iraqi nuclear program circa 1995. That description is potentially misleading since the research occurred years earlier. I don't think the are suggesting Sadaam was a year away in 2002. I think they meant he was a year away when Iraq invaded Kuwait.
To: stboz
Of course the NY Times lead with U.S. Web Archive Is Said to Reveal a Nuclear Guide, and admonished the administration for putting information on a website claiming it could have helped Iran develop nukes...
This...is my spin. I took out the one jewel.

The Times is trying to spin this as "allowing these documents to be downloaded and translated by anyone on the web meant that anybody out there could learn how to build an atomic bomb, how horrible". As others have noted, that's their little last-minute attempted October surprise.
The reality is that the documents show that Iraq was a lot closer to building a nuke than the Times, the Dems, and their pals have argued. That certainly doesn't help the Dems.

This is a good time to reflect on Hazel O'Leary's declassification program of of nuke and bio-warfare documents under Clinton. I recall Madeline Albright saying something about it being necessary to constrain the hyper-power US by bringing weapons programs of other countries up to speed.

Anyone who reads the entire article can see that my observation is accurate. My statement had nothing to do with what I think.

You wrote, "Is the NYT so committed to destroying Bush that the didn`t understand that this story vindicates the war?"
This news was bound to come out, either by the NYT or some other--perhaps even a slightly more pro-Bush--MSM outlet. If this story has legs, the NYT wants to 're-frame' the news in the most negative way possible in order to stifle its effect: 'Yes, Saddam was close to realizing the bomb BUT the Bush administration has been so lax in safeguarding captured Iraqi nuclear documents that it has advanced Iranian research by several years.'
The NYT headline won't be 'BUSH RIGHT ABOUT SADDAM WMD THREAT', but rather, 'BUSH GIVES IRAN NUKE PROGRAM BIG BOOST'.
That's my take on things, anyway.
