MediaNews to outsource proofreading to India
Halfway to Concord ^ | 11/12/6 | Bill Gram-Reefer

Posted on 11/12/2006 9:48:49 AM PST by SmithL

The swirling accelerates around the drain as MediaNews announced it has eliminated 20 more jobs from its Bay Area Newspapers. This round of cuts includes advertising production and proofreading jobs from the Contra Costa Times. Blaming a “sudden and steep decline in home sales,” George Avalos reports that staff was told such work will be outsourced to Express KCS, “a leading provider of offshore design and prepress…” services.

Can you imagine the conversation when the folks at Fitzpatrick Chevrolet have to call Sarosh in Bangalore to correct a misprint in some Hummer’s sale price? Why stop with the ads? Maybe the Times could outsource its editorial board as well. Or maybe it already has?

If you watch the crawler on the bottom of the screen on any of the news networks, you'll wonder if the haven't been writing them in India all along.

Something tells me that some of the slang is going to come back looking like a bad babblefish translation...

LOL.

Isn't the MSM that's in favor of "immigration" ( the illegal kind )? The MSM liberal excuse - "let them come, they do the jobs Americans don't want to do.

The MSM going to get a taste of their own medicine - not many Americans want to "proofread" for 50 cents an hour either. What a surprise.

Next?

These folks from India speak and write in English... They can write copy too!!!

How many reporters are willing to "work" for $2.00 an hour? Looks like we've found one more job Americans don't want to do!!!! Are all you MSM, New York Times, Washington Post, NBC, CBS, ABC guys feeling a little goosed and gandered?

HaHa... Love it.

FWIW increasing amounts of transactional legal work are also being outsourced to India -- at like 1/10th the cost.

I'm curious how prevelant American slang is in India.

Not just the crawlers, have you ever checked out the closed captioning? I mean, I really feel sorry for people who have no hearing. I've heard it's computerized, but I don't think so. You really should check it out; it must be outsourced to morons.

Thanks abb. This reminds me of when Dell Computer outsourced their 'tech help' to India and I could no longer understand them so my paying for 'tech help' was wasted!

Hey - maybe that was the whole idea!!

My son worked for the CCT a few years back, as a paperboy. After he left, they turned the route over to an adult. I no longer get my paper on my porch, and I'm lucky if it's not in the gutter. I canceled my daily subscription, but they still leave me a paper everyday. That way they can over-inflate the numbers of readers to the advertisers.

Sadly, Fitzpatrick Chevrolet has no choice in the matter. One of the few things most people still rely on newspapers for is car ads, and if there's only one newspaper in town...

Maybe the folks from India will be an improvement. Can't believe how many misspelled words I find in the local fishwrap, and even in the WSJ.

It's been the same in my newspaper for the last couple of years. Products of our educational systems downgraded teaching now.
