Wal-Mart Contributes 5% Of Online Sales To Homosexual Group
AFA action site ^

Posted on 11/13/2006 8:05:07 AM PST by Gopher Broke

In a show of support to help homosexuals legalize same-sex marriage, Wal-Mart has agreed to automatically donate 5% of online sales directly to the Washington DC Community Center for Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender People. The cash donation will come from ALL online purchases made at Wal-Mart through the homosexual group's Web site. This move follows Wal-Mart's joining the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and agreeing to give generous financial help to that group.

Every purchase made online for books, music, videos, clothing and accessories, children's clothing and toys, and electronics at the site will automatically send 5% of the sales to the homosexual group.

With this agreement, Wal-Mart made clear their support for the homosexual movement was a total commitment to the cause.

Many observers feel it would have been a wise business decision for Wal-Mart to remain neutral in the cultural battle over homosexual marriage. But this was an ideological decision by Wal-Mart, not a business decision. Wal-Mart decided to give the promotion of homosexual marriage their full support.

These two sentences don't agree with each other. Low credibility factor when you distort like this.

What a horribly misleading title. Did these morons JUST discover what an on-line affiliate program is?

I'm a Libertarian, and I think it's great that gay people are joining up with Wal Mart to participate in capitalism!

"Less than careful readers..."

Even careful readers are going to have trouble picking that up from the AFA home page, which runs a rather deceptive headline claiming:

"Wal-Mart Contributes 5% of Online Sales to Homosexual group.

Sign the Pledge to not shop at Wal-mart on Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving."

Hmmm... Methinks that AFA is more concerned about the donations that this hoopla will bring the AFA, rather than the donations it will bring the "homosexual group" involved.

Terribly misleading article and assertion.

Affiliate marketing is behind half of the search results you'll see on the Googles and Yahoos of the world. Hotel and travel aggregators (Hotels.com, Expedia, Travelocity) rely heavily on the affiliate channels (essentially refer someone to us and we'll pay you x deals) to generate traffic and sales. Amazon.com pays affiliate bounties for sales, as do many online retailers.

See http://www.cj.com/index.html for information on how it works.

Thank you!! People with even a passing knowledge of the retail industry could figure out that even WALMART cannot afford to donate 5% of all receipts to a group.

Get a grip folks.

Article title is a flat out lie. I hate the homosexual agenda, but this doesn't help anybody. They only get 5% of the sales directed from their site. And it is a commission. It is sorta how the internet works. I will not use that particular site.

I don't think this article is factual. %5 of Wall Mart is comparable to many nations GDP. This is Bull$hit.

I'm positive it's not 5% of all online sales. Do you know how much money 5% of all of walmart's online sales probably is? The management of the company would be fired instantly if they were going to donate 5% of their sales of anything to anyone.

5% of queers sales that go through the queer website to Walmart will be refunded to the website. It is the way the internet works. It is a commission for bringing in business via a different channel. It is NOT 5% of Walmart online sales. Get real.

AND, Boortz tracked this down a little further and discovered only ONE purchase from their site, for a grand total of $4 going to the homosexual group!

"The AFA are being a bunch of idiots because this is just an affiliate plan. The only way you contribute to the gays is by going through their website first."

If you have a moment: An affiliate between/among whom?

Going through whose website?

Thank you.

AFA and Don Wildmon lost a lot of credibility at our house with this stunt. We have been on their email alert list for years and we still are, but this taught us a lesson: take everything with a grain of salt and take nothing at face value without careful investigation. The sad thing is we are 99% in agreement with the AFA's stands and objectives. But they blew this one bigtime.

The problem isn't that they opposed WalMart on this issue. The problem is that they were so desperate for the issue to gain traction that they stoooped to lying. Yes, that's right, I'm calling them on it. It's a lie. Not just a "distortion" or even a "misrepresentation." It's an outright lie. What Wal-Mart actually did, may or may not be worthy of a boycott. (Frankly my wife would find it hard to stretch our budget enough to feed our large family without Wal-Mart's grocery prices, but we are willing to make sacrifices when the cause clearly justifies it.) But the problem is that Mr. Wildmon wouldn't tell us what Wal-Mart actually did. Instead he made up something they didn't do and told us that because he thought it would sound more exciting.

Judge for yourself. AFA says:

Wal-Mart has agreed to automatically donate 5% of online sales directly to the Washington DC Community Center for Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender People.

Is that true? not at all. It is just 5% out of a tiny fraction of Walmart's online sales. Viz., 5% of all referred sales that come from the GLBTP (or whatever) website. Wildmon's charge quoted above is false.

The cash donation will come from ALL online purchases made at Wal-Mart through the homosexual group's Web site.

In the next sentence (quoted above) Wildmon covers his tracks by spelling out the true situation, but muddies the truth deliberately so that what stays in most readers' minds is the original lie. He even allcaps "ALL online purchases" to distract from the fact that it's just the referral business that's at issue, not Walmart's own direct online sales at all.

I do not deny that there is a genuine moral conundrum presented in the question of whether or not to even accept, much less solicit, referral business from flagrant moral degenerates with their own demonic political agenda. I am sure Freepers would line up on both sides of that question. I'm not taking sides on it at the moment, and I'm not sure which side I'd come down on. But I know for sure I am not going to endorse, support, encourage, or promote this AFA lie because it undermines the very cause AFA is trying to stand for. We must not only stand for what is right and against what is wrong, we must always do so by doing what is right and not doing what is wrong. The end never justifies the means. If it does, then the moral relativists are right after all, and we might as well quit caring about anything.

< End rant >

Leaving aside the prickly issue of such an alliance, this is a fairly typical arrangement for referred purchases

To: I still care; AppyPappy

There is a Wal-Mart link on the web site of this gay group. When a person clicks on the link, it takes them to the online Wal-Mart site. Through the magic of Al Gore's interent, any purchase made from that link is noted, and 5% of the sale is rebated back to the refering site. As AppyPappy notes, there are many groups that do this, most of whom no one would find objectionable in the least.

Get rid of this thread...repeated and full of distortions that we discussed already. I will continue to support Walmart will all of my Christmas shopping on-line. This does not mean that 5 percent is going to a pro-homosexual group. Get a grip before you ruin a good company.
