Duncan Hunter can Win!

Here's what I like most about Congressman Duncan Hunter: Tom Tancredo has had kind words for him, and Hunter talks in depth about three key issues which should be central to the current political debate.

1) Fighting the war on terror:

Our national intelligence and defense communities must be provided with the tools necessary to identify, track, stop and prosecute terrorists before they have the opportunity to strike. The fact that America has not been attacked since September 11th indicates to me that we are on the right course. I am confident we can remain on that course by providing our intelligence agencies with the resources they need while, at the same time, maintaining our commitment to the continued protection of our civil rights.

2) Keeping American Industry and Jobs in the U.S.

American workers are the most productive and innovative labor force in the world. Unfortunately, they are asked to compete in an unfair environment against other workers who make only a fraction of a living wage and are employed by companies that face few, if any, responsibilities to the environment or the long-term prospects of their employees. Our domestic manufacturers are forced to compete against foreign companies that benefit from their country's currency and regulatory regimes. Ominously, China is cheating on trade and using billions of American trade dollars to build ships, planes and missiles at an alarming rate while, at the same time, taking millions of American jobs.

3) Securing Our Borders

I know fencing helps secure our nation's borders because criminal activity in every statistical category has been eliminated or decreased since we built the border fence in San Diego County. What was once a porous border, susceptible to illegal aliens, drug trafficking and terrorism, is now the standard mode in preventing drug smugglers from bringing narcotics into our neighborhoods and allowing border enforcement personnel to reinforce areas of greater need. These results led me to write the Secure Fence Act, extending the San Diego fence 854 miles across California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

Besides being right on the biggest issues of the day, Duncan Hunter is noteworthy for his integrity. He is not promoting a laundry list of solutions to every problem we face, and he is not wrapping himself in the cloak of past political heroes (i.e. Ronald Reagan) to justify his political stance. He is not dealing out the same tired hand as every other Republican regarding the failures of the GOP majority and the true meaning of "conservative." Listening to him, you get the impression he does not need to spell this stuff out.

If you listen to Duncan Hunter speak, you will come away with the impression that he is his own man.

Fact is anybody on the ballot can win even if the odds are long. For that reason we ought to listen to each and every one of them.

Sam Hunter: am: My father believes in limited government, requiring only a large enough bureaucracy to execute the basic functions of the Federal Government, while leaving control of all other aspects of Government to the states and the American people.

Duncan Hunter is a true conservative and patriot. Sadly, I can't say the same about any of the other candidates.

Duncan Hunter '08!

I could not agree more, RightWhale. I want to see 'em all in a debate!

Not to be disrespecful to Mr. Hunter, who by all accounts is an exemplary conservative, or his many FR supporters, but outside of Free Republic I have never seen any metnion of him. Not even on Fox News (thougth I admit I could have missed it). And I certainly doubt the MSM is talking about him.

It is early yet, but traction and name recognition go hand in hand.

You've missed them all. He's been on Fox this week, MSNBC, Glenn Beck and Dobbs and Blitzer on CNN, among others.

Trust me, if I have missed him, the average American who could care less about politics until the day before time to vote, has missed him as well. (There, I think my spelling has improved a bit over the last post. ;-)

That's why we all need to get the word out about Duncan Hunter. Tell your friends, write letters to the editor, and contribute to his campaign. We can't expect the MSM to pay any attention to a real conservative.

And so is the founder of my former company - an exceptionally worthy man. However, he's not running for presidency.

Likewise. Given the number of qualified candidates emerging, I'd like to see a marathon debate. Don't want to see any question unasked or unanswered -- no stone left unturned.

Such an event would help to solidify the party and would be very healthy for the nation. Would also let the rank and file Dems realize how bare their cupboard is and what the real problems facing the nation are. The Dems certainly are not going to be told by their leadership.

True for me too FRiend. I hear mainly about McCain or Guiliani. Its on FR I read about Hunter and others.

Wonder if they're (the MSM) trying to promote safe alternatives to their lefty candidates.

That's a pretty safe bet IMO.

Someone asked about what programs Hunter would cut. Here is something he said about that.

3. Balanced Budget Duncan Hunter

I support a balanced federal budget, with additional revenue provided by economic growth, not increased taxes. Further, I support limiting growth in non-defense areas.

4. Areas of federal spending that will be priority for reductions and increases:

A balanced federal budget is a priority for our national economic health and long-term prosperity. Throughout my tenure in Congress, I have fought for federal spending to provide for our national and homeland security, as directed by the U.S. Constitution, and funding increases in both of these arenas will be necessary in the future to keep our families safe and secure

Budgetary savings must be identified through efficiency reforms throughout the federal government. Furthermore, we must aggressively attack the creation and funding of duplicative federal programs, many of which simply do not perform but cost taxpayers millions of their hard-earned dollars. According to Office of Management and Budget, 28% of federal programs are either ineffective or have results that are not demonstrated. Reforming, combining or eliminating those programs remains among my highest legislative priorities.

I think Hunter would unify conservatives once the other "secondary" candidates begin to drop out. I suspect that Tom Tancredo and Ron Paul will endorse Hunter once they get a fair hearing.
