Virginia Tech -- Now THIS is How You Do It

What happened during the UT Tower shooting in 1966. Now this would be a strange sight on todays campus...a Professor shooting HIS deer rifle out of the class window while another professor was handing him ammunition:

A security officer came into the room saying someone was shooting from the top of the tower. We evacuated the classroom rather quickly. The hallway and basement were the safest places to be but I decided to go up to the top floor offices to get a better idea of what was happening.

A University of Texas Professor used his deer rifle to counter-snipe at a deranged killer shooting students.

By doing so, he and other civilians, unquestionably reduced the death toll while waiting for the police to respond.

Without them, perhaps today's record number of deaths would have been set then.

Am curious. Did he just happen to keep a rifle in his class room?

I think back in the days before carrying a gun was considered to be dangerous, illegal, a bad thing, people all over the place had guns and carried them.

I plan to become on of those old fashioned gun carrying person asap.

My high school is across the street from prime duck hunting wet lands (now a "sanctuary", sadly).

In 1967 when I attended, I used to bring my shot gun to school - on the bus - and store it in my locker for hunting after school.

This shocks the beejeebers out of my 20 year old daughter that guns would be on a "gun free zone"

I hope you taught her that a “gun free zone” just means that ONLY the criminals have guns there.

It was reported he went back to his car or truck to retrieve it.Different times & place. Not quite the same situation as VTech but then again the “ gun free “ zone saved no one. Cho may have thought twice about killing his fellow students or could have been stopped by a concealed carry student or faculty if weapons were allowed on campus.

Great article!

VT failed their students in many ways. After disarming them, VT failed to provide adequate security (not even safe rooms).

Pretty poor combination. In contrast, this article shows a more robust defense of students.

In those days (when UT wasn’t the cesspool of ultraliberalism it is now), EVERYbody went deer hunting, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he had his deer rifle there. Good hunting within 15 miles of downtown in those days!

Whitman had a Remington 700 that was put out of action early by counter fire by civilians. He also had a .35 Caliber rifle that was not scoped so early on he was crippled by using an M-1 Carbine and an unscoped .35 caliber lever action and two pistols. Whitman made his most remarkable shots using the Remington 700.

I was viewing James Cameron’s Titanic recently. It has a sound track of Mr. Cameron’s comments on the movie that you can hear while the movie plays. if you saw the movie you might remember that guns figure at a few points in the movie.

He noted that in his research on the sinking he looked at the autopsy reports of the bodies recovered (368) and was surprised by how many of the deceased men were carrying guns.

We don’t realize how our own ancestors really lived, do we?

exactly! They all carried guns like women carry lipstick in their purses wherever they go. These days hardly anyone is carrying because it is so politcally incorrect to do so. Not for me!
