"We all expect the price of electronic gadgets to fall over time, but Apple mustve set a new speed record today with its announcement just 68 days after launch that its slashing the price of the 8 GB iPhone by $200.
Thats a 33 percent price cut the kind of sale usually reserved for product flops, not modest successes. (Speaking of flops, Apple also announced it would discontinue the $499 4 GB iPhone because no one wanted it. Big surprise.)"

..."But some business experts questioned the move, saying it might annoy people who bought the iPhone when it was first launched."
Ya Think ?
How can it annoy cultists who see Steve Jobs being capable of no wrong? By definition, cultists love being violated by their cult leader. That's just what they do.
And the people who actually thought they were buying a phone, they've already been annoyed, but, like that guy who got stuck in the Arctic, they only have themselves to blame.
I apologize to the iCultists but I've been too busy to photoshop Steve Jobs head on a dog yet, but it's still on my list.
Good point on cultists. If it was worth it to me to get the iPhone the first weekend it came out, it’s not worth less to me now.
It may be worth it now for more folks who couldn’t handle the price tag earlier.
“It may be worth it now for more folks who couldnt handle the price tag earlier.”
Not sure if a $200 price cut makes a big difference if you are signing up for $1200+ worth of service also.
You’re right but some how, some way, most of these people are committing to even more than the $1200. As the AT&T contract is two years, most people are locked in for closer to $2K (1800) but no one is focusing on that anymore. My business was with T-Mobile for seven years with no contract but I don’t regret the switch. The phone itself is worth it although the AT&T service is not altogether equal in quality to T-Mobile here.
I’m guessing the price cut will have an impact as they couldn’t squeeze any more volume at the higher price. They have very aggressive targets this year.
“They have very aggressive targets this year.”
Got that right ... according to some they have only moved 500K in the first two months.
To meet their goal next year, they would have to push out almost twice that EVERY month.

Curious ... isn’t that like saying my new, more expensive car dosen’t drive very well, but the stereo is great ! ?
Seriously? Is this real?
I told my dear wife the “fanatic tax” would last until November, but they’ve deleted it already.
All I’m saying is that I’ve had very clear service all the time with T-mobile and it hasn’t always been the case with AT&T. But the phone is only part of the equation obviously with all the features.
I haven’t had any problems with the phone to speak of other than a call or two with some static. Could have been my bluetooth headset for all I know.
Clearly though, they are cutting the price to increase volume.
I have no problem with them cutting prices. It makes sense. People who adopt something early pay more when it comes to anything hightech. My digital camera cost $200 less four months after launch. Its what happens!
Eh. I do not think they should offer any refunds.
I never understood people that have to jump on a new gizmo
when it first comes out. I call them suckers.
In less then a year there will be new entries to the market and existing Iphones will be junk.
OK Apple fans...flame away :)
Looks like everyone gets back at least $100 -

That eats up about 50 Million in profit right there.
A fool and his money are soon parted. Also, a company should never incriminate themselves.
I disagree. The phone is fantastic.
Yeah, but it's still a phone. It's hard to see paying that much money for only a phone and the service plan. But I'm not too big a fan of phones.
I had been with T-mobile for my business for years. No problem but I just hated my lumpy thick phone and its broken camera that didn’t work.
Then as I pondered how I would go about changing it, the iPhone announcement came. Bought it the first weekend it was out.
Today a friend wrote me after seeing it over the holiday weekend that they will give this $100. Didn’t expect it and thought people were complaining too much.
Guess I’ll have to live with that too now. :)
I’m not a phone fan either. But I like the great integrated features of this with the phone. It’s the best product I’ve had in a while.
How does one get the $100 rebate? Details on that are sketchy in the article.
I attempted to get the $200 rebate, but that only covered phones ordered on or after Aug 22. Wouldn’t you know that I ordered mine on Aug 20. Can you believe it?! I had a few choice words for the poor mope on the phone with me.
Sure would like that hundred though, provided it’s an actual refund and not store credit to the Apple store. If that’s what it is they can keep it. Either way, I’ve purchased my first and last Apple product.
Oh, I think. I definitely think. :-)
I was apoplectic earlier today and made sure the Apple rep I was on the phone with took the full brunt of my fury. I know it wasn’t his fault, but it sure felt good.
My guess is that it will me some sort of credit - I doubt that they will be cutting checks
Hey, that’s like ... 110 new ringtones !
