Book details media 'whitewash' of Hillary Clinton scandals

A new book argues that the modus operandi of the mainstream media is to help Hillary Clinton win the presidency. The book documents a litany of instances the authors say demonstrate the media has either ignored of failed to investigate scandals involving the former first lady.  Brent Bozell is co-author of Whitewash: What the Media Won't Tell You About Hillary Clinton, but Conservatives Will. Bozell, who heads the Media Research Center (MRC), says there is no convoluted or sophisticated explanation for why Senator Hillary Clinton (D-New York) gets a pass from most members of the mainstream media -- they simply want her to win the White House because she epitomizes what they want in a candidate.

According to Bozell, an examination of past Clinton scandals reveals "over and over again" that it was not Bill Clinton, but Hillary Clinton at the center of the controversies. But he is convinced that because Mrs. Clinton has so many "cheerleaders" in the press, she is rarely asked tough questions and charges against her are not thoroughly investigated.  "Every single time she gets caught in a scandal -- [and] we document this [in the book] -- a wall is built between her and the American people" that prevents the truth getting out, he says. "And if a story does come out somehow, immediately the tables are turned and whoever came up with the story is the person who's put on trial."

The MRC leader offers examples of his accusation that the mainstream press often turns the table on Clinton's accusers. "When the American Spectator came out with the 'Troopergate' story, the story was the American Spectator -- it was not the Troopergate story," he asserts. "It was an attack on the American Spectator."  And the "vast right-wing conspiracy" charge leveled in 1998 by then-First Lady Hillary Clinton was a response to the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Bozell adds -- then notes tongue-in-cheek that he is still waiting for an apology, given that there was no such conspiracy and "given that she wasn't telling the truth when she said she knew nothing about Monica Lewinsky and blamed it somehow on conservatives."

Basically, says Bozell, people need to realize that when they hear media reports about Senator Clinton, they are merely getting "press releases from the Hillary Clinton camp called 'news.'"  In Whitewash, Bozell and co-author Tim Graham interview a series of conservative leaders including Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and Newt Gingrich regarding evidence of how the media has buried stories that would hurt Clinton's presidential hopes.

This is going to be a very depressing campaign coming up, because this campaign revives all the old Clinton scandals and also brings in new ones, such as the Hsu fundraising scandal. A Republican with the baggage of the Clintons would never get a campaign for president off the ground.
