Huck is to the left of George W. Bush. Do conservatives really want an even more compassionate George W. Bush Lite who is weaker on fiscal issues and a nanny stater?

I’ve had my fair share of compassionate conservatism. What I’m ready for is some good ole conservative conservatism. Government should promote rugged individualism and self-sufficience. People should get tax breaks for each rung they climb on the ladder to wealth. Those kinds of policies would make this country greater. But instead we get a government that tells folks no need to fend for yourselves, we have a program! I absolutely cringe every time George Bush gives a speech with the words ‘government has a role to play’ in _________ (fill in the blank).

"During the legislation session, Huckabee criticized an immigration bill by Republican senators Jim Holt of Springdale and Denny Altes of Fort Smith as un-Christian, un-American, irresponsible and anti-life. Huckabee promotes 'open door' policy at LULAC convention

Thursday, Jun 30, 2005

By Wesley Brown

Arkansas News Bureau

LITTLE ROCK - In a impassioned speech before hundreds of influential Hispanic civil rights leaders from across the nation, Gov. Mike Huckabee told a captive audience Wednesday that America is great because it has always opened it doors up to people seeking a better way of life.

"I would hope that no matter who we are, or where we are from, that America should always be a place that opens its arms, opens it heart, opens its spirit to people who come because they want the best for their families ...," Huckabee said as the largely Hispanic audience gave him a standing ovation.

Huckabee was the keynote speaker, along with Tyson Foods Inc. Chairman and CEO John Tyson, at a noon luncheon of the League of United Latin American Citizens, which is holding its 76th annual convention in Little Rock.

About 10,000 political, community and business leaders, along with exhibitors and speakers are in Little Rock attending the convention at the Statehouse Convention Center. The convention started Monday and runs through Saturday.

Although he never actually talked about the U.S. or Arkansas immigration policy, Huckabee made it very clear where he stood on the issue. In his opening remarks, he said the nation will need to address the concerns of the Hispanic community because of its growing influence and population base.

"Pretty soon, Southern white guys like me may be in the minority," Huckabee said jokingly as the crowd roared in laughter.

He told the LULAC delegates that their presence in the state's capital city was very important because Arkansas has one of the fastest growing Hispanic populations in the nation. "Your gathering is so very significant for our state," Huckabee said. "We are delighted to have you."

Despite several light moments, Huckabee did not stray away from several controversial issues that made him a target of criticism during the recently ended 85th General Assembly. He said Arkansas needs to make the transition from a traditional Southern state to one that recognizes and cherishes diversity "in culture, in language and in population."

"This is an issue that is going to require extraordinary efforts on both sides of the border, particularly those coming from Mexico," Huckabee said of verifying the status of illegal aliens. "But I am confident that our government will recognize that we should accommodate people who wish to provide the best opportunities for their families (and) employers so that we can make sure our economy has the necessary work force."

During the legislation session, Huckabee criticized an immigration bill by Republican senators Jim Holt of Springdale and Denny Altes of Fort Smith as un-Christian, un-American, irresponsible and anti-life. Senate Bill 206, which died in the Senate, would have required proof of citizenship to register to vote and also force state agencies to report suspected cases of people living in the country illegally. Holt, R-Springdale, replied later to Huckabee's comments that Christian charity does not include turning a blind eye to lawbreaking.

Huck makes no sense at all. It is one thing to give an illegal child a basic education (which I believe the Supreme Court has already mandated). It is quite another to demand that taxpayers provide college education. And why help only with college when they leave HS? Why not demand that taxpayers subsidize those who want to start businesses rather than continue in academia? It’s the same rationale—to be able to earn a better living. If you start providing college ed, it is only a matter of time before all manner of post-HS benefits will be demanded on the same basis.

Huck’s a nice guy. But we have brighter bulbs in the chandelier, who not incidentally, have no desire to function as National Nanny.

His soul doesn't have a say-so. It's his conscience that won't let him.

Now, why would any man develop a conscience that thinks it's okay to take money from industrious and hardworking people to hand it over to interlopers and law-breakers?

If he would just sell his soul for a pair...

I'd much prefer Huckabee over RINOs Giuliani or Romney. At least, he is geniunely socially conservative and comes off as far more honest. I would tend to believe he would be like Bush in that he would follow through on his campaign promises and he has strongly supported tax reform, promised not to raise taxes and indicated he would security the borders.

That being stated, I much prefer Fred Thompson. It's time to abandon RINOs and get behind Fred if we are to have a nominee that doesn't have liberal tenancies.

Whether it be Giuliani, Romney or Huckabee, the last thing America needs is another big government Republican. We don’t need more social liberalism.

Fred Thompson is the only candidate talking seriously about reforming government spending policies and coming to grips with the ongoing expansion of federal entitlement programs. Fred`s a fiscal conservative who has offered detailed proposals to meet the challenges of big government head on.

Most of those who have bought into the Huckabee craze do not know that much about him. The illegal immigration issue is at or near the very top of the list of importance in this election and his record and his stand on this, despite some recent comments carefully spun to try to make them more palatable, are going to be a deal breaker with the American people.

Lot of politicians came down on the wrong side in the illegal alien debates because they actually feel being sent to Mexico is some sort of punishment.

On a world-scale, of course, it's not. Most of the world is far worse than a Mexican pigsty and the majority of people would feel privileged to be allowed to live there ~

Huckabee, "W", Giuliani, etc. aren't so "liberal" on the issue as they are "ignorant".

The Democrats, though, are simply evil when it comes to illegal aliens. They want to keep those poor people in this country to use as some sort of slave class for an indefinite period.

This philosophy is the ESSENCE of George W. Bush-Compassionate Conservatism! We are in deep shit if this wins in November. Our country cannot stand another four or eight years of unfettered illegal immigration. We will be TOTALLY overrun! This must be stopped!

Huckabee: I can’t compromise on scholarships for illegals because “my soul will not let me”

Funny. His soul was perfectly fine with cutting that same scholarship out for an entire class after 9-11, and then banning them from reapplying when the scholarship was reinstated.

I can understand the 9-11 budget cuts. What makes me furious is not letting us - native born citizens - apply, but saying it's perfectly fine for illegals to recieve the very same scholie. I'd love to hear someone in the media ask him about it.

Huck is a fraud. That's coming from an Arkansan.

Huckabee must have had a few too many when he made that statement. What a clown - not presidential and it is difficult to have any respect for him. He appears even to the left of Rudy in fiscal matters.
