He, the Jakarta street kid, was living with the Dunhams in Hawaii. After all, he was their step-grandson, and being a flaming homosexual, it would have meant living dangerously in Indonesia.
He was born in 1957, same year as his foster sister Lia Soetoro Soba (see: Nachum’s Death List). The year 1975 when he began attending Punahou School (Hawaii) he would have been 17/18-years old.
He had the gift of languages: Indonesian, English, Arabic, all mastered before he went off to Occidental College (Calif.) were he was assigned to foreign student housing. Here, I believe, is where he learned Pashtun, the language used in parts of Pakistan.
