Elephants in the Middle of the Room: Immigration and Education Policy
Democracy Project ^ | July 14, 2008 | Phil Orenstein

In a recent email discussion with Winfield Myers, Director of Democracy Project, I mentioned that rather than searching for topics, issues seem to find me. Recently the issue of immigration reform has been pursuing me, and it dovetails with the critical issue of the failure of American schools to prepare our students to compete in an international marketplace. The issue came up as a result of my firsthand empathy with the dilemma of a talented young colleague on a temporary visitor’s visa. He would love to build his future in America, but sadly for him and our company, the door to the land of opportunity will be soon slammed in his face. Draconian immigration laws will force him to return to his native Italy after his temporary J-1 visitor’s visa expires in 5 months, since his H-1B visa application wasn’t selected from the lottery pool for specialized workers. This issue of immigration reform is one of the elephants in the middle of the room that speaks to the very heart and soul of the issues that are tearing apart the moral fiber of our country.

Once again...there’s no RIGHT to stay here after your visa’s expired. If people want to come here to take advantage of all this nation has to offer, they do it with their eyes wide open to the limitations on that opportunity. I just don’t see this as “tearing apart the moral fiber” of the nation...

THere is no reason why he can’t get in line and make that dream come true LEGALLY. Why should he cut in front of others? I see no reason why. Nor am I an idiotic “bleeding heart”.

It's not talking about cutting the line. This is about an educated and skilled immigrant seeking a work permit to stay in the country, and after $8,000 is legal fees, you'd think he'd get his work visa granted.

The point I think Phil was trying to make is that here we have all these Mexicans pouring in illegally, and our lawmakers want to give them immunity, while the Italian immigrant, trying to stay in a legal fashion, will be sent back home. That's not the American way!

If we didn’t have 20,000,000 illegal Mexicans here we could probably find room for the handfull of deserving cases you read about like this one. We’re letting the wrong people in.

the problem is the illegals have jaded the entire legal process.

Kick out all the illegals and start afresh.

I understand ... what we need to do is ENFORCE out laws on ILLEGAL immigration and as for those coming here LEGALLY, get in line.

We are in violent agreement on this issue. My point was that not everybody gets to come and fewer get to stay. Do it the right way and we’d love to have you.
