With Gustav approaching New Orleans Residents stocking up on AR-15’s and ammo
dvorak.org/blog ^ | 08/28/08 | McCullough

Posted on 08/30/2008 8:21:56 AM PDT by TornadoAlley3

We just got a call from Devline Rossell, a charter captain based out of Venice, Louisiana. He was shopping in New Orleans to get some supplies before the arrival of Gustav (currently listed as a tropical storm that has left at least 22 dead in the Caribbean) and reported that the item most in demand was not food, clothing or shelter.

“I just left a sporting goods store and you would think that the number-one selling item would be plywood or potable water or gasoline right now,” he said. “Apparently it is AR-15s and .223 ammo. I watched at least 20 people buy AR-15s and cases of .223.”

Can’t say I’m surprised. After the nightmare that was Katrina I think it would be unwise for anyone to assume the state, local or federal government could guarantee his or her personal safety during a natural disaster. Of course, I think it is foolish to assume that under any circumstance.

The AR buying spree demonstrates that people don’t think of it as an “assault weapon” but rather an arm that is ideally suited for self-defense, which it is. I also suspect that for some of the folks this is their first firearm. Goes to show that not only is there no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole but that there is no such thing as a gun-control advocate in one either.

They had the DEA and National Guard, along with CA Highway Patrol and other various state organizations.

Well storm shutters like that are big and ugly. It’s not like the small ones worked into the design of the window.

Depends on how much ammo you already have, and how wise the wife is ...

You’re better off with about two hundred rounds you have and 15 hundred empty cartridge cases that show evidence you practiced.

Shooter; the 200 yard range at my home club, the 600 yard range at the Des Moines Rifle Club and the other 200 yard range just south of Council Bluffs were littered with the brass of 2,000 rds used to perfect my skill with that gun (less the rounds used to sight in some scopes on the Rem and T3) in all of the required positions.

But, thanks for reminding everyone that you are only as good as your range card sez.

Ammo - you never have enough. It’s like a woman and shoes.

You have the 20 rd box, plastic battle wrap bags, ammo cans, crates, cases, spam cans - and then we have to start all over again with the next caliber.

:-)

I would hope that Katrina would awaken even the dead.

Speaking of the Obamassiah:

Obama: Let’s hope lessons of Katrina were learned
By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 34 minutes ago

BOARDMAN, Ohio - Barack Obama expressed hope Saturday that the lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina three years ago would help to protect the Gulf Coast from Hurricane Gustav this time. His running mate, Joe Biden, urged people to pray that the levees in New Orleans hold.

Obama and Biden visited a diner in this Youngstown suburb, an area that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton carried during her failed presidential bid. Trying to connect with those who are economically struggling, the Democratic candidates and their wives chatted with diners and told reporters that a properly orchestrated evacuation would be key to protecting the Gulf Coast.

“It wasn’t last time, and hopefully we’ve learned from that tragedy,” Obama told reporters as he left the diner, heading to a memorial service for the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress. She died Aug. 20 from a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm.

Obama and Biden planned another joint appearance later Saturday in the Columbus area.

Northeast Ohio, a Rust Belt region where the economy has struggled, supported Clinton’s presidential bid back in March. Obama carried the Democratic stronghold of Cuyahoga County, with Cleveland, but lost 83 of 88 counties.

Since then, Obama has been a frequent visitor in the area, trying to connect with the white, working-class voters who have eluded him thus far.

Biden said the Gulf Coast appears better prepared for a major hurricane this time than it was for Katrina, which left New Orleans and surrounding areas submerged. He said it appeared officials had learned from Katrina, and he praised moves to make major highways one-way routes out of the storm-targeted areas.

“It looks like they’re incredibly well prepared, much better than they had before,” Biden said. “Just pray to God that those levees hold.”

The Bush administration’s handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 has been lambasted by both parties’ presidential candidates. Republican John McCain has called the response shameful, and Obama regularly blasts President Bush.

Gustav gathered strength as it barreled toward Cuba on Saturday, on track to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast. The storm already has killed 78 people in the Caribbean.

Joe, it's very Un-PC of me to say it, but when Katrina hit, my first thought was "drinks, and then weapons!" If you have that, you can, ahem! "liberate" the rest you need.

Probably my old shipbreaker and pirate ancestry talking, but that's the honest truth, how I saw it.

This is an example of piss poor planning. The AR-15 and ammo should have been bought a long time ago. I didn’t need to have an emergency to prepare myself. My house is already wired for the emergency generator sitting in my garage on a trickle charger. I have firearms and ammo for defending myself and for hunting. We have water close by in case the well is unusable and we have food on hand. My wife and I will be able to weather most emergencies quite well.

The National Guard, the Oklahoma National Guard, and US Marshals did an awful lot of gun confiscation, too.

After the nightmare that was Katrina I think it would be unwise for anyone to hang around if it zeros in on New Orleans.

IMHO, For property defense, they'd be better off with 12 Ga. shotguns with high capacity magazines loaded with 00 Buck.

I still haven’t figured out the thing about plywood. ...

me neither, same goes for 'sandbagging' the same spots around the Miss river...why not just pour concrete over it after the water recedes ???

Wife, "Another one?!"

Me, "Just doing my part to keep guns off the street."

I have an AK-47 clone in semi-auto that is very nice. Old man Kalishnikov designed a very simple easy to field clean weapon.

Of course when the going gets real rough, there is always the M-1.
