Fresh violence in Mosul, two Christians kidnapped and killed
The kidnapping of two Christians has ended in tragedy, after the family of one paid a ransom of 20,000 dollars. The community of Mosul hopes that the Muslims will strongly condemn the murders.

Mosul (AsiaNews) - The Iraqi Christian community is again in the sights of Islamic fundamentalists in Mosul: today news came of the death of a 65-year-old doctor, Tariq Qattan, kidnapped recently by a terrorist group. AsiaNews sources say that his family had paid a ransom of 20,000 U.S. dollars. But it was not enough money to free Tariq Qattan, one of the many Christians kidnapped by fundamentalists for extortion.

Also in Mosul, two days ago - although the news has just been released today - another Christian, Nafi Haddad, was kidnapped and killed. It is not yet known whether or not a ransom was paid. Despite the small signs of improvement that seem to come from Iraq, the Christian community is still witnessing more violence: Mosul has long been the theater of a genuine slaughter, forcing more than two thirds of the faithful to flee elsewhere in search of safety.

The diocese has paid a large tribute in blood in recent years, beginning with the tragic kidnapping of Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho, whose lifeless body was found last March 13 in an abandoned area just outside of the city. During the ambush that preceded the archbishop's captivity, the three men acting as his bodyguard were massacred by the terrorists.

In 2007, the Iraqi Christian community suffered 47 deaths, 13 of them in Mosul: these include Fr Ragheed Gani, murdered on June 3, and two other priests.

Between January 6 and 17 of this year, there was also a series of attacks on Christian property. A wave of bombings struck the Chaldean church of the Immaculate Virgin, the Chaldean Church of St Paul, which was almost destroyed, the entrance to the orphanage run by the Chaldean sisters in al Nour, a Nestorian church, and the convent of the Dominican sisters in Mosul Jadida.

The source for AsiaNews in Mosul hopes that the two latest homicides will be "forcefully condemned" by the Muslim community, which has just celebrated the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. Atrocities carried out "in the name of religion"...

Gates to brief Bush on Iraq recommendations....Meanwhile, fatal bombings shattered a period of relative calm in the Iraqi capital Tuesday at the start of Ramadan, Islam's holiest month.
A roadside bomb detonated near al-Kindi Hospital in eastern Baghdad, killing two civilians and wounding 13 others, including several policemen, an interior ministry official said.
Another roadside bomb exploded in western Baghdad's al-Harthiya neighborhood, killing two civilians and wounding 10, the official said.
Outside the capital city, a suicide truck bomber targeted an Iraqi army checkpoint in the northern city of Mosul, killing seven civilians and wounding seven others, the official said.
The violence coincides with Ramadan, which began Tuesday for Shia Muslims in Iraq. Sunni Muslims in the country began observing the month Monday.
The exact start of Ramadan -- Islam's ninth month -- depends on the sighting of the new moon. Muslims are required to abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk.

Philippines Bomb Blast Hits Weary South
TIME - [Sep. 1, 2008]
Philippine security forces stand guard near the site of a bomb blast inside a bus parked at a terminal in Mindanao on September 1
marked the beginning of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting and reflection. But on the southern Philippines island of Mindanao, wracked for the past month by bloody fighting between Muslim separatists and government troops.. a new horror. That afternoon, a bomb exploded aboard a packed passenger bus in Digos City, killing six and wounding at least 34. According to a witness report, the powerful blast nearly tore off the roof of the bus, decapitating one passenger.

Extortion syndicate behind Digos City bombing, bishop says  [Sep 2, 2008]

By LESLIE ANN G. AQUINO
DIGOS CITY — Digos Bishop Guillermo Afable said yesterday a syndicate out to extort money from bus companies was responsible for the bombing of a bus in the province the other day.

Afable’s disclosure was made in his statement posted yesterday on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website.
The Digos prelate, however, did not identify the members and leaders of the syndicate.
The bishop bewailed that Monday’s bombing incident resulted in the "loss of lives of innocent people."
"We are grieving here," he said.
"It is a heinous crime against innocent men, women and children [and] have nothing to do with the political, economic, or personal agenda of the perpetrators of the said crime," added the prelate.
Afable said the crime "becomes even more grievous in the context of compounding socio-political and economic ills already burdening our people, especially the poor."
He asked the faithful Lumad, Christian and Muslim to pray for truth, justice, love and freedom. He also requested that prayers be said for the victims and their families.
Bishop Afable also appealed to both the police authorities and public officials to curb lawlessness in their areas of responsibilities and safeguard every citizen from criminals and terrorists.
The people, for their part, should also cooperate with law enforcement officers in securing the safety and security of both private homes and public places, he said.
The bombing incident which occurred Monday noon at the Digos City Bus Terminal killed at least six people and left 28 injured.
Last July 23, a Weena bus exploded, killing one person and wounding 32 others.

Extortion gang uses women to plant bombs

MANILA (DPA) - Philippine police said Tuesday that an extortion gang that has been blamed for two recent bombings in a southern city uses women as bomb carriers for the deadly attacks.
Six people, including a pregnant woman, were killed and 30 injured Monday when a bomb ripped through a bus in Digos City in Davao Del Sur province, 1,005 kilometres south of Manila.
Senior Superintendent Cesario Darantinao, provincial police director, said the al-Khobar extortion gang was the main suspect in the bombing.
He said a woman was believed to have planted the bomb after witnesses said a female passenger hurriedly left the Metro Shuttle company bus before the blast.
Darantinao said police were also looking for a woman suspect in the bombing of another Metro Shuttle bus July 24 in Digos City, which killed two people.
‘’The al-Khobar gang must have decided to tap women to sow terror because they do not gain undue attention from authorities most of the time,’’ said a police investigator who requested anonymity.
The al-Khobar gang is composed of rogue Muslim separatist rebels who have resorted to criminal activities to raise money. It has been blamed for numerous attacks on bus companies and other firms.

Police are trawling slums and criminal hideouts in India's capital rounding up suspects after serial bombings in the city on Saturday killed at least 21 people and wounded nearly 100.
Police said they were pursuing several leads, including talking to an 11-year-old boy who said he had seen two men drop off a large plastic bag at one of the blast sites.
At hospitals, relatives of victims accused police of failing to protect them. "Down with the police," they shouted, some with tears in their eyes. "We don't trust you any more."
"Helpless?" read the banner headline of the Sunday Times newspaper, expressing growing frustration at the inability of authorities to prevent a string of bomb attacks in recent months...A group calling itself the Indian Mujahedin sent an email to television stations shortly after the first explosion saying it was responsible.

Pakistan’s bombing seen a big blow for markets Reuters India
Sun Sep 21, 2008 4:25pm IST By Sahar Ahmed
KARACHI, Sept 21 (Reuters) - A suicide bomb attack which killed at least 53 people in the Pakistani capital Islamabad will be a big blow to foreign investment and will lead to further weakening of the rupee which is already trading at a record low, dealers and analysts said on Sunday.
A suicide attacker set off a huge truck bomb on Saturday night at the Marriott Hotel, part of a U.S.-based chain and a favourite haunt of diplomats and rich Pakistanis.
The Czech ambassador and an American and German national were among the dead, while more than 270 people were wounded in the worst militant attack in the capital.
“In the short-term, its another hammering for the rupee,” said a currency dealer.
“It’s a big blow for foreign investment as foreigners are going to feel less secure in investing in Pakistan and the fact that the government is not able to control these attacks does not leave much confidence in the market.”
The Pakistani rupee weakened to to a record low of 78.27 against the dollar on Saturday because of weak economic fundamentals and the global financial crisis.
It has lost 21.3 percent against the dollar since the beginning of the the year.
Dealers also said the market was short of dollars because of the central bank’s buy/swap operations. The central bank has been buying

13 hurt by vehicle [Arab] attack in Israel; driver killedr Mon Sep 22, 5:33 PM ET
JERUSALEM - A driver plowed a BMW into a group of soldiers at a busy intersection near Jerusalem's Old City late Monday, injuring 13 of them before he was shot to death, Israeli police and the rescue service said. Jerusalem police commander Ilan Franco said a soldier in the group killed the driver. The driver was not immediately identified, but Franco said he was a Palestinian resident of east Jerusalem who apparently acted alone. Israel TV said the car was registered to a resident of Jabel Mukaber, an Arab village inside the city limits.
It was the third incident in Jerusalem in which vehicles apparently have been used as weapons in recent months. In July, two Palestinians living in Jerusalem carried out separate attacks using heavy construction machinery that killed three people and injured several others. Both attackers were fatally shot by police and soldiers.

Muslim rebel attack kills 11 in southern Philippines

[Oct. 2, 2008]

Eight Muslim rebels and three soldiers have been killed in the latest outbreak of fighting in the troubled southern Philippines, a military official said.

Guerrillas of the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fired on an army patrol in Datu Piang town in the island of Mindanao yesterday, killing the three soldiers and wounding 12, local army commander Colonel Marlou Salazar said.

Military reinforcements backed by armoured vehicles arrived later, prompting the rebels to flee using civilians as cover, he added.

The bodies of eight rebels were recovered from the scene, the Colonel added.

The military earlier said it expected fighting with the MILF to increase following the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The military says its operations are against two MILF leaders, Umbra Kato and Abdurahman Macapaar, who are accused of leading deadly raids against mostly Christian towns on Mindanao Island in early August that left dozens dead and displaced 500,000 people.

The Government has been holding peace talks with the 12,000-member MILF but the violence flared after the Supreme Court struck down a draft agreement on August 4 which would have given the MILF control of large swathes of land in the Mindanao region.
