During Columbia Universitys ServiceNation Presidential Forum on the seventh anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks, Judy Woodruff of PBSs NewsHour With Jim Lehrer demonstrated that she understands as much about volunteerism as Charlie Gibson does about the Bush Doctrine.

The times have changed. In World War II, a young Bobby Kennedy served as an enlisted seaman. Maybe I’m being unfair and wielding a broad brush, but it’s hard for me to see many young men of any political liberal family having such a desire to serve their nation.
Yeah, and the rest of the troops would have to worry about “friendly fire” - but on purpose.
Heh, heh.

Why Elites Dont Serve In The Armed Forces. .............BECAUSE THEY’RE PARASITES!
A case can be made that one of the advantages of serving in the volunteer force is that guys like BHO and JB don’t serve. That being said, the army benefitted from the draft and I think a good case could be made to resume it in the case of a major ground war against a competent enemy.
:) :) :)
Elites don’t serve in the military, but the military people BECOME elite by serving!
Good point!
Beg to differ, FRiend. I served in the Air Force with a number of folks who enlisted to avoid being drafted into the Army, and continued to serve after the vast majority of them separated. I also served with folks who enlisted in the all-volunteer force, and much, MUCH prefer volunteers. Not all of them are perfect, either, but quite a few more of them approach it, from a military standpoint.
NO MORE DRAFTEES! You want to do universal service, and let some of them dig ditches and build infrastructure, like CCC, I might get behind that.
Mayor Daley’s son
Again, a major ground war against a competent enemy will put the issue to rest; it will happen. The army can once again raise standards and perhaps even tighten up the requirements that were reduced to accomodate the social engineering. Perhaps the homes for unwed mothers that are much of Forts Eustis and Lee can go back to being in the army. As regards national service, it would be a waste of money and talent, just like the CCC. Those who are training for trades/professions are already making a transition into productive citizens.
