Our Joe Just Can't Help Himself (Joe Biden)

Maybe our Joe is right.

If Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden doesn’t let the pressing matters of the day bother him, so why should I?

Tell a tall tale. Have a drink. Just be what I am – a scrappy kid from Scranton who’s got the best stories in the bar.

The next time I stop at Joyce’s Tavern in the Irish Minooka section of Scranton, where my grandfather landed after he emigrated from County Galway, I’ll tell the lads some dandy stories.

I’ll always remember the day, I’ll say, just like Joe does when he tells a whopper, when Cassius Clay held up his hands and refused to fight me. And then there was the time I turned down the lead role in “Rocky” because I wanted to give a young kid named Stallone a break and help him get started in the movie business. And don’t forget when I pounded Mike Tyson into a heap on Birney Avenue.

“What a guy,” the boys in Joyce’s will say.

That’s our Stevie,” they’ll marvel.

And I’ll be just like Joe – a neighborhood hero in the gritty city I love so well.

So what if I exaggerate? Who cares as long as I impress the lads and they like what I say and I make them feel that I’m really one of them? Then, before I buy the bar a drink (telling Tommy the owner to put it on my tab) and tip my hat on the way out the door, I’ll dazzle them with words to remember me by.

“Ask not what your country can do for you,” I’ll say. “Ask what you can do for your country.”

“Where does he get those words?” one impressed bar patron will ask.

“God’s on Stevie’s side.”

The crowd will roar and I’ll be off looking for the next blue-collar, working-class Scranton saloon where I can spread the blarney and hope for the best – just like Joe.

That’s a nice fantasy - if only it were true. Actually, throwing the bull on too regular a basis could get you thrown bodily out of a real hardcore Scranton barroom.

So I advise against laying it on too thick.

But sometimes people like Biden just can’t help themselves.

When I was a kid, I knew a guy who had a neighborhood store. His name was Harry Snow and he’d regularly tell us about the time he exhibited great courage in the ocean by asking the guy next to him, “How’s the water, John?”

To hear Harry tell it, he was reassuring John Fitzgerald Kennedy that everything would be all right after they got blown up in PT-109.

We kids laughed so hard that our sides hurt. But Harry stuck to his guns. And we knew he was making it up.

Biden’s problem is that we don’t know when he’s telling the truth or stealing quotes or losing control of reality.

In Wilkes-Barre yesterday, Biden stole the best line from former President Bill Clinton’s convention speech in Denver and recited the words like they belonged to him.

Our Joe said he would love to live in a country that led by the power of its example rather than by the example of its power.

Biden really should know better.

After plagiarism scandals and telling stories that are not true, you’d think Biden would have learned his lesson and know that Barack Obama’s chances at winning the November election depend in part on Biden’s behavior on the campaign trail.

But I’m still waiting for Biden’s apology to the people of Northeastern Pennsylvania whose relatives worked and sometimes died in the coal mines. Biden once said his ancestors worked in those same mines, like my grandfather did for 45 years.

And that’s false.

The Obama-Biden campaign has promised to provide details about the apology, but so far they haven’t kept their word.

That’s a fact.

That’s the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

So help me, Biden.

Biden strikes me as a man completely devoid of moral conscience. A true Democrat.

Great little story. Thank you for the fun humor, yet deadly seriousness of the crisis we face from Joe and Barack and the Democrats.

I URGE ALL TO ATTEND OBAMA/BIDEN RALLIES AND HECKLE THEM TO NO END. ORGANIZE WITH FRIENDS ANDSTAKE OUT SEVERAL PLACES AROUND THE RALLY.

SHOUT THEM DOWN WITH “AYERS”, “ABORTION”, “REZKO”, “WRIGHT”!

MAKE SURE YOU TELL THE MEDIA TO “PUT IT WHERE THE SUN DON’T SHINE!”

I didn’t realize until now how perfect a running mate he is for Barry - they both lie like there is no tomorrow.

Corbett (the author) is an interesting guy. Self-described “left wing radical”, but respectful of opposing opinions. He has been registered Republican (voted for Reagan), switched to Independant, switched to Dem, ripped up registration card over the air after Obama didn’t select Hillary as running mate, and has been discussing every day on his radio show about all of Obama’s deficiencies.

He’s on the radio from 3p-7p, as well as the Internet, and I’m sure he has a lot of listeners. He actually did a column on my son, after he had emailed Corbett (I listened to him long before that): http://wilknetwork.com/Small-Towns-Can-Create-Big-Minds/2957118
