Colin Powell launched into a bizarre rant on Meet the Press today in which he endorsed Obama largely because of anti-Muslim bigotry that Powell believes has become commonplace in the Republican party. Here is what Powell said...

I care so little what Colin Powell says, feels or thinks. Yes he served our country well and for years, was an admired hero. However, the last couple years he was serving our President it seems he was not the same man. When there was talk of him running for President I was sure he would never get my vote. Now he has made a judgement of Barack Obama, his opinion he is entitled to, I have a much different opinion.
The Barack he so admires has been in my state, North Carolina, more polling places were set up to accommodate the crowd. If John McCain did that, they would be on every TV in the country telling us what a devious campaign he was running.

wow. strange. what dog does he have in the muslim fight? one has to wonder. never really cared for the dude much, but i give him credit for not bashing mccain personally or calling him racist. he took care to say the party, NOT mccain. that said, what is wrong with the party? republicans and conservatives are by far the least racist of the parties. do they have ANY idea how racist the dem base is? those small town, gun owning, church going dems are some of the most racist (against blacks and Jews) i have ever run across. powell has lost his mind! get this man a straight jacket.....

It staggers the mind that not that many years ago Republicans were mulling the possibility of running this disgraceful affirmative-action general for the Presidency. Whew. Class will tell.

Something’s up with Powell. I’m suspecting that he’s on psych drugs or something. First the endorsement of Obama, now this weird rant. Something’s wrong.

Powell’s comments are bizarre and offensive on several levels. First, his hypothetical that if Obama IS currently a Muslim that should not be held against him leaves aside the inconvenient point that it would mean that Obama has been lying for 20 years about his religion for purposes of political “viability”.... in 2008 the first issue would be the deception, not what religion he is..... why should anyone vote for a presidential candidate who’s been lying about his religion for political purposes?

2nd, why on earth should Powell imply that this matter has anything to do with why he’s not endorsing John McCain??? If anything it would be more reason to support John McCain and allow him to stand for the non-discrimination that Powell acknowledges is a core part of McCain’s character.

3rd, of course, Powell shows that raising straw-man issues is a routine part of his political thinking. Several/all of his talking points were totally bogus.

btw, how on earth can Powell pretend that Obambi is anymore “qualified” than Governor Palin and then dump on Palin??

I swear, I think Powell just memorized the David Axelrod talking points b/c that’s how it sounded. Powell decided to try to put Obama over the top with a late endorsement plus a petty dishonest attack upon Governor Palin.

Thoroughly dishonorable, Colin Powell. Simply dishonorable.

"what dog does he have in the muslim fight?"

I predict that he will be amply rewarded with some of those $200K per pop "appearances" in Middle Eastern countries plus some fat "consulting" contracts - or maybe he's getting those already. Anyone know what his sources of income have been in the past few years?

The end of Powell's political career. Well, at least the speaking engagements should still pay good. He should do well enough.

One thing about the political biz is loyalty. Powell isn't a maverick, he's just a dishrag liberal with mush for brains. No loyalty... nobody's going to trust Powell in politics now.

You don't endorse somebody because they are being treated unfairly. If that were the case, why not endorse Sarah Palin?

I don’t think Powell thinks Palin is being treated unfairly. He actually piled on Palin also in that rant.

so the almighty dollar rears its head again. spose under a obama presidency our tax dollars will pay powell to do that too? i checked newsmeat, which shows donations and he gave to mccain, not obama? every donation he gave since the 90s was to the R candidate, and 2 ind in the 90s. what gives? are the libs right and he is a plant? i dont know what his income has been but it would be good to see WHERE it comes from. maybe he donates to one party and makes money from the other? would be consistent with backstabbing.

It was the most savage and gratuitous dis-endorsement imaginable. Powell called McCain’s capacity into question. Was it really necessary to assasinate his friend of 20 years just so he could go with the smart money? Horrible.
