Not sure about party but the gov of Hawaii is a personal friend of the gov of Alaska.

Linda Lingle, the Governor of Hawaii who ordered the birth certificate sealed, is a Republican.

Another FReeper (wish I could remember who) remarked on a thread a while ago that one reason for that action could be that the certificate may be evidence in a legal proceeding.
