from what I understand, hindus can be pretty brutal, too.

They can be, yes.
BUT- you don’t defeat monsters with ballerinas. Islam is a brutal enemy- if it takes an equally brutal response to destroy it, so be it.

Being ‘understanding’ and tolerant has gotten us to where we are with the death-cult barbarians of Islam.
Let the most brutal of Hindus at them!

Actually Hindus are a very peaceful people. A recent report on the problems with the Indian police response in Mumbai noted that police officers are not usually armed with handguns, they carry bamboo sticks. Doesn’t mean there isn’t crime in India but it isn’t dealt with force of arms. The Indian cops were way out of their league dealing with the terrorists.

They certainly can be against non-Hindus.

But, for the record, they were way ahead of most of the West on the true threat that radical Islam posed. There were some westerners (Lothrop Stoddard in “The New World of Islam”) who knew what was going on as far back as the 1920’s. But the Indians in general knew how utterly insane the extremist (and not even necessarily militant) Muslims are.
