What would have happened during the reign of Saddam Hussein if an Iraqi journalist (not that such a thing existed at the time) had stood up during a presidential press conference and thrown a shoe at the podium?
Lets see. The offender might have been simply taken out and shot, but you cant write off the possibility of Saddams sadistic sons sticking the guys head in boiling acid to make the point a little more forcefully.
None of this applies today, because Iraq was liberated by George W. Bush. So when the very same George W. Bush finds himself the target of flying shoes during a joint Baghdad press conference with Iraqs president (who was freely elected via the democratic process thanks to George W. Bush), the nimble Bush merely grins and explains how this sort of thing happens in free societies.
But torture still occurs. Its just that it now takes the form of atrocious journalism by the Associated Presss Jennifer Loven, whose stories have been peppered for years with snarky anti-Bush analysis perhaps derived during pillow talk with her husband, environmental activist and former Clinton Administration official Roger Ballentine.

Pres. Bush has had years to strike back at the “Bush-hating media,” but he has never chosen to do it. He’s not defended himself in any noticeable way at all. He’s played a rope-a-dope that’s never left the ropes and finally come out on the attack.
He has brought all of this upon himself even though he had the bulliest of pulpits, a huge budget, a huge organization, and years of opportunity. He has kept silent when his friends tried to defend him, and he’s left them hanging in the wind wondering when he was gonna show up. And he never showed up.
President Bush defaulted away his presidency. I have no idea why. It will puzzle me for years.
He has a chance to redeem himself somewhat in the eyes of his supporters by pardoning border agents, Compeon & Ramos, and Marines like Chessani and Wuterich.
Will he do it?
I wouldn’t hold my breath.
BUMP what you said.
I am not holding my breath.
During Hussein’s reign not only did CNN never toss a shoe his direction even metaphorically, they actually helped him hide his murders.
