Is CNN Pushing Kids to Ask For a Salary for First Lady Michelle?
Publius' Forum ^ | 12/22/08 | Warner Todd Huston

CNN has a segment that they call "CNN Student News" that is supposed to highlight the news of the day for the kiddie set. Pursuant to that, in a December 15 segment, CNN floats a question asking if Michelle Obama (or any First Lady) should get a government salary just for being First Lady?

But, what we really ended up with is a slight to those same students to whom CNN was ostensibly relating the news. No where in the report was there any talk of the Constitution in particular nor the law in general as the CNN anchor cajoled the kids into viewing with awe the "work" of the First Lady and in fostering in them a feeling that First Ladies should be paid for this "work."

In fact, one interview during the segment even made happy talk of the fact that, during the Clinton administration, Hillary Clinton's travel and causes forced a "moving public works project" wherever she went. There was no hint of the burden this posed on the places she visited and no sense that these expenditures were unfunded nor that such expenditures were never voted on by the people of the states she visited. The kids are left uninformed that this "moving public works" burden was forced upon taxpayers unawares.

CNN did not stress that a First Lady has no official role and no elected mandate to spend the public's money on whatever cause she so chooses to expound upon -- though a brief quote from Laura Bush that a First Lady "is not an office holder" was included at the end of the segment...

Sounds like Michelle wants to be able to buy her own bling, but wants to use taxpayers' money.

Note to the Obamas: It's called public service for a reason, you two.

We need a new nation (like the old one, the *really* old one where the Constitution was followed and enforced by every armed Freeman in the country, you could buy a machine gun at the hardware store, and the government *feared* us).

In Britain the Left complains about the allowances that are paid to the Royals. Here the Left is tinkering with the idea of creating exactly that situation.

It’s my understanding that Michelle O. does not have a law license — that she makes all her money by sitting on boards & filling what appear to be non-demanding executive postions. It’s not like she has to shutdown a law practice, or anything.

but I can’t hink of anything “Aunt Esther” deserves money for.

Plastic surgery
Eyebrow plucking
Liposuction
Wardrobe consultant.

The list could go on and on.

They try to liken her to Jackie Kennedy. More like Eleanor Roosevelt. Why are the libs ifatuated with Jackie? She wasn't all that pretty, and I think her "grace" was more of a media creation.

Laura Bush has always exhibited class and grace, and is a REAL hotty to boot.

I agree!!!
The taxpayers are burdened enough to pay and protect those elected, mush less their spouses, who are not elected. They, as you said are already receiving the best and the most! (Besides all the sides they make (such as; speeches, writing books, etc.)and if Hillary were elected, Bill would become a double dipper again!
Lets start cutting salaries and benefits in porportion to our economy!

That’s why we have the ballot box. If we keep re-electing these crooks, the fault lies with us.
