My friend and fellow Bulletin columnist, Frank Diamond, has come up with one of the best ideas of the new decade an organized effort to formulate a plan to kill The New York Times.
He writes, Conservatives should convene a summit to come up with our own secret weapon to kill The New York Times. Surely, the brightest minds on the right can think of some business technique perfectly legal but perfectly lethal to hasten this monsters demise. (The Bulletin, Jan. 7) Mr. Diamond said he got the idea of a secret weapon from Bob Woodwards book The War Within, in which he reported a secret weapon contributed to the success of the surge in Iraq.
I think Mr. Diamond is on target and there ought to be a some high-powered thinking and deliberation dedicated to coming up with what would be a death sentence for The New York Times.
The usual approach is a boycott organized to get readers to cancel their subscriptions and to stop reading the paper and its Web site and to boycott advertisers as well. As far as I know, these boycotts have chipped away at the circulation and economic power of the Times but not enough to prove fatal or even inflict a serious wound. But enough small cuts can add up to big problems. The Times isnt dead yet, but I think it is well on the road to being anemic. Mr. Diamond writes, I have seen boycotts come and go. Ive watched the Times weather scandal and recession. Its as resilient as cancer, and just as deadly. Something more is needed.

Why do we need a plan? The Times is self immolating.
True, but with some help, we might be able to be rid of it faster. The sooner this vile piece of garbage is gone the better.
Exactly.
The only thing WE need to do is pop some more pop-corn and enjoy watching it burn.
It’s Time To Kill ‘The New York Times’
NO....please No......That paper is so full of S%$T, that it makes a wonderful base when igniting my fireplace!!!!
I’m sure George Soros is ready to come in and save the NYT sometime in 2009-2010.
Give the Navy a Lat. and Long.
I’ve seen a story or two about Rupert Murdoch wanting to buy it.
Partially relevant post: it’s one thing to get worked up about the Times but read the comments accompanying every story.
There are a lot of delusional people out there and the self-regard absolutely leaps off the page.
Why not just leave it alone and let those people keep their jobs for as long as they can?
Don’t kill it, reform it. A free and honest press is an essential counter to bad government.
No need for an organized effort. Pinch Sulzberger is our greatest ally in ushering in the demise of the Slimes.
One might say that most, if not all of the people at “the Times”, do not do their jobs (reporting the news) very well, thus do not deserve to keep their jobs.
Yeah, and don't arrest criminals, they need work too.
here, here (hear, hear?.... whichever)
Right, like all those employees are criminals.
Right
