various | 01/31/2009 | various

"This year, taxpayers will receive an Economic Stimulus Payment. This is a very exciting new program that I will explain using the Q and A format:

"Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment?

"A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.

"Q. Where will the government get this money?

"A. From taxpayers.

"Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?

"A. Only a smidgen.

"Q. What is the purpose of this payment?

"A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, more clothes, stereos, DVD's, CD's, or GPS for your car thus stimulating the economy.

"Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China or Malaysia or Indonesia and Japan ? "A. Shut up."

I always buy my fruits and vegetables at the local farmer’s market. I know it’s produced locally.

>>Pay down debt, or save it. Those are really about the only responsible things to do with it at this point.<<

Savings is not an option when the interest rates banks pay you are 2% and headed South. What good will savings do if a) Congress follows through on plans to sieze 401K’s, or
b) Congress F’s up the economy so bad that the dollar is worthless. We’ll wish we had saved our Confederate money.

I buy them because they are a good car and if they EVER make a profit it will come to the USA. Sure the it may be assembled in CAnada or Mexico but the profit is here. With Honda or Subaru the profits go to another nation. I know I am a hipo. I still shop at Walmart. But I was raised in Michigan and try to buy GM. I have been happy with every car I have owned.

Even so, it's still probably a better choice than spending it all on rapidly depreciating assets that were made in China or Malaysia.

my point was, is that workers in foreign nations are making those profits

I am just flummoxed at Unions that never went on strike when foreign plants opened up

If there was ever a just cause for a union to strike it would have been when a foreign base of manufacturing was opened.

It isnt’t just about saving money, it is about capital equipment moving to foreign econimic competitors, skills leaving, parts makers leaving, foreign manufacturing ramping up to support these new plants, service jobs in those new plants now go to foreign workers instead of people here

It is the loss of the job itself that bothers me the most. I dont want to hear people chime in on Union skulduggary, that is a different issue

the issue is American companies moved oerations overseas to keep their profits high, and this cost Americans jobs, and THAT brings down the economy

“Boeing opened up a new line in China last year, did it not?”

NO. They do build us parts, but not what we call the “tube” or body section. For[some] Boeing models China builds horizontal stabilizers, vertical fins, the aft tail section, and wing-to-body fairing panels. This web site shows a color coded breakdown of what is supplied by China.

I’ll use my check to pay the taxes on my Alaska permanent fund dividend.

I agree. I have seen it too. I grew up near Flint MI. It is now almost a ghost town. A shadow of its former self.
