Your Butt Will Look Good In These Jeans (Part II)
The Stiletto Blog (third item, "The Other Shoe Drops") ^ | February 4, 2009 | The Stiletto

In the February 9th issue of New York Magazine, designer Isabel Toledo – who outfitted Michelle Obama for the swearing in ceremony - is asked whether the two women had met. They had, just one time, and Toledo tactfully describes her first impression:

“I hugged her and thought ‘Let me see … what size?’ She’s got an amazing torso and long, beautiful arms. She’s like a spider.”
Toledo chose not to be blunt about Mrs. Obama having large hips, thighs and buttocks. But rather than be dishonest or fawning, the designer subtly made her point by comparing Mrs. Obama’s figure to an insect that tends to have skinny arms and a bulbous lower body.

“She’s like a spider”

No sh*t. We found that out when she wore that black and red thing.

well I was wondering who designed that ridiculous gold outfit...I bet some Vegas hotel is still looking for their drapes...and that white dress that she wore to the inaugural ball looked like someone's bedspread!

“butt?” if she had to haul ass, she'd have to make two trips! LOL

When Toledo was trying to calculate MO’s size by eye, she must have had a brain freeze because designers are used to working with single digits (size 0, 2, 4) so her mind is not hard-wired for size 16 (though the media laughably reports MO’s size as being 12 - as if all of their female readers won’t know they’re full of it).

Personally, I don’t care that MO is a large woman - most women are not size 4 - and she could have used her bully pulpit to force designers to make clothes for real women. But the ass-licking (literally in this case) media is going to pretend like she is a goddess instead of a very ordinary looking woman who would have been completely unremarkable had she married, say, a cop. So having a first lady with significant figure flaws isn’t going to help the rest of us a bit when it comes to influencing the fashion industry.

I could care less about her size but that red thing, gold thing & white bedspread she wore were all UGLY AS SIN!
I don’t care who “designed” it.
But then “money don’t buy class.”

That morning outfit was weird—white lining instead of a matching lining that real designer clothes have, a strange hanging scarf, dangling strips that should have been tied, sweater flopping underneath, and a hideous color. Worst of all, it was too tight in the bust and hips, making her look pregnant. And it should have been a couple of inches longer to hide her bow legs.

She is built like a bow-legged bell.

Plus - and this is a very subtle fashion point that Jackie O would have known, for instance - MO’s dress was one shade of yellow/green, her gloves were another shade of green and her shoes were a third shade. Ideally all of them should have matched, but at the very least her shoes and dress should have been the exact same shade (Jimmy Choo would have been very happy to dye a pair just for her). MO has a habit of combining bepoke dresses with off-the-rack accessories and that cheapens the look of a very expensive designed frock. Clearly, she has a lot to learn about high fashion - not that the MSM will admit it. They are touting her as a style-setter. Barf!

I don’t think she’s a size 16. 12 does look about right, at least for jackets and tops. Maybe 14 for skirts and pants. She’s not heavy, she’s my mother...in-chief.

I think size 12 is right for the top, but if you look at her from behind, she looks like a 16 (though like many women with pear-shaped figures, she would have to have the waist taken in). Let’s split the difference - maybe she can wear a 14 with “full cut” styles and a 16 with slim cut styles. Plus remember that she is also 6 feet tall which also argues in favor of a larger size.

I recall in years past that the media and fashion designers generally claim the first lady (both Laura Bush and Hillary) is a “perfect size 8”. I didn’t believe them then and I don’t believe the size 12 claim now.

She just doesn’t know when to stop, does she? Simplicity in style is WAY above her fashion sense.

I seem to recall that they were mum about Barbara Bush. They probably didn’t want to bother coming up with an indefensible number since she was a “mature” woman and not expected to influence fashion, which “as we all know”, is only of iterest to young and thin women.

Exactly. It ticks me off that “mature” women are virtually ignored by fashion “experts”. Someday I’ll be one and I plan to look **faaaaabulous**!
