Sensible Liberal: Camille Paglia
Vocal Minority ^ | 2/16/09 | EricTheRed_VocalMinority

Salon editorialist Camille Paglia might very well be the last remaining liberal in the true sense of the word—as opposed to the liberty-suppressing “progressive” leftists who now occupy the White House and dominate both Congress and the mainstream media.

Why? Because Paglia is actually a liberal/Democrat who opposes the “Fairness” Doctrine! I know, I know, you’re shocked. I was too.

The blog Freedom’s Lighthouse posts this statement by Paglia:

If there’s anything that demonstrates the straying of the Democratic Party leadership from basic liberal principles, it’s this blasted Fairness Doctrine—which should be fiercely opposed by all defenders of free speech. Except when national security is at risk, government should never be involved in the surveillance of speech or in measuring the ideological content of books, movies or radio and TV programs.

Broadcasters must adhere to reasonable FCC regulations restricting obscenity, but despite the outlandish claims of Democrats like Sen. Charles Schumer, there is no analogy whatever between pornography and political opinion. Nor do privately owned radio stations have any obligation to be politically “balanced.” They are commercial enterprises that follow the market and directly respond to audience demand. The Fairness Doctrine is bullying Big Brother tyranny, full of contempt for the very public it pretends to protect. […]

Instead of bleating for paternalistic government intervention, liberals should get their own act together. Radio is a populist medium where liberals come across as snide, superior scolds. One can instantly recognize a liberal caller to a conservative show by his or her catty, obnoxious tone. The leading talk radio hosts are personalities and entertainers with huge rhetorical energy and a bluff, engaging manner. […]

Aw, crud. I missed it! If I knew Tammy was subbing for Laura I would’ve caught it. Maybe she’ll discuss it on her own show today. Thanks.

Camile Paglia is the favorite liberal of many conservatives.

Ho-hum.

Paglia is intellectually honest. She is a friend of Rush Limbaugh. I would give anything to sit at a table with them and listen to their discourse.

Paglia is such a pleasure to read. She’s clear and articulate, unlike so many political commentators of today. You can’t help but admire this. It shows that there are still one or two clear thinkers on the left who can stand by their politics without becoming unhinged and demented about people with views differing from their own.

She wrote a couple of articles about how much she admired Sarah Palin. Read them. They’re a breath of fresh air. Paglia says outright that her politics will have her voting for Obama (well, she’s a lib!) but she says the feminists and media are a bunch of vicious fools for piling on Palin and not recognizing what an accomplished and admirable woman she is.

“Sensible liberal” is an oxymoron, like “progressive liberal.”

Many conservatives of today were the liberals of yesterday. If you understand true liberalism, you will see how the majority of people who call themselves liberals today know nothing about liberal philosophy (British liberalism, not French liberalism) and are actually fascists in “progressive” disguise. Read Goldberg’s book LIBERAL FASCISM. Tammy Bruce has a similar tome. They’ve hit the nail on the head.

Many of today’s liberals were more conservative, in the 1960’s. In 1962, President Kennedy proposed tax cuts, similar to Reagan’s cuts, and the majority of congressmen, of both parties, supported it. In 1968, VP Humphrey gave a speech and said that governments should discourage women from having babies out of wedlock. He sounded similar to VP Quayle’s 1992 Murphy Brown speech, but few Democrats complained, when Humphrey said it. Since 1968, the majority of Republicans kept their conservative values, but the majority of Democrats became more liberal.

I think the majority of Democrats have completely gone off the deep end and out of spite remain completely ignorant. How many, do you suppose, understand the assault on privacy contained in the new healthcare database just established in the so-called stimulus? They’re blind. Talk about medical decisions being between a woman (or man) and their doctor - now the government will be the Peeping Tom over it all. But never fear, liberals, your abortion rights are safe. Just don’t try getting a hip replacement after the age of 65 because the government will deem you’re not “cost effective” anymore. They are such fools!

You betcha! I read all her columns over at Salon (I found her years ago via Drudge)M.

I admired Paglia’s fierce defense of Palin’s grammer, education, and accomplishments. Paglia is scathing in her ridicule of the Feminazi’s and their rabid support of abortion. She is pro-choice herself but she sees the great irony in the hysteria and in the ‘sisterhoods’ misogyny. I look forward to her monthly pieces.

I think about about a third of congressional Democrats understand the assault on privacy contained in the new healthcare database.

Too many liberals say that women have a constitutional right to abortion. We have constitutional rights to freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion, because those rights are mentioned in the Constitution. A woman can only have a constitutional right to an abortion, if abortion is mentioned, in the Constitution.

True, but the bigger picture is that they only care about government intrusion when it interferes with their “choice” to do what they want - “me, me, me” over the rights of the little life inside them. But they care not too hoots about the huge government takeover of other people’s choices in selection of their medical care. This is a Trojan horse of the worst kind, because it will change America for the worse forever.

Camile Paglia is the favorite liberal of many conservatives. Ho-hum.

Tammy Bruce overstated Paglia's status among liberals. She (Paglia) would be riding high if not for her strongly reasoned dissent from the liberal establishment. For the same reason, Paglia's status among conversatives, even though she is not one, is well-earned.

Speak for yourself. Paglia is a hardcore liberal, an athiest, a 60`s radical feminist and a lesbian to boot. She fully supports Roe v Wade, abortion on demand and big government welfare statism. Paglia was on the cutting edge in the 1990`s. Today, she's old hat. Besides, even a broke clock is right twice a day.
