Starting in 1975 through 1984, I spent a lot of time walking the streets of the middle east, always unarmed and often alone. The threat of being rolled up in a rug and spirited off to some place like all those Beirut hostages were being held was always in the back of my mind. Thank God it never happened, but I did shudder a lot to think of what MIGHT have happened.
