I posted a few months ago with info about CA split into 5 states. The SF Bay and LA County states would be ridiculously Democrat, but the three “normal” states (one in San Diego, Orange and Imperial Counties, the second in the Inland Empire, Kern and Ventura Counties, and the third in the Central Valley, Sacramento County and the areas to the north) would have voted fairly comfortably for Bush in 2000 and 2004 but would have voted for Obama in 2008. Impy, you may be able to find the post easier than I could.

Pretty good chance four of them would be Republicans. Which is why the Democrats would never support any breakup plan.
It’s really a great idea to break up California any way you look at it.
It has more people than Canada or Iraq (it would be the 35th largest country), it’s too big and ungovernable. And the leftist stronghold areas hold millions of normal people hostage.
I like the 5 state plan.
If you were gonna split it in 2, separating the coast (maybe expect for the OC and San Diego) from the interior as Bill Maze suggests would be the best for Republicans politically. In a north-south division the southern state with LA would lean rat but not as much as the entire state does now.
California may be headed for third world status in the not too distant future unfortunately.
That could bring breaking it up into serious consideration. Democrats are likely to strongly oppose.
Yup, I'm one of those that proposed a division of the state, but almost entirely along political divides that would assure a gain of conservative US senators.
Anyone that has studied state election results knows the proposal in this article would most likely produce four additional liberal senators with possibly a gain of two conservative senators.
Not to worry though. This proposal hasn't even the slightest chance of happening. It would require the voters in the southern parts to give up water from the northern parts. Would never happen. That is a key reason I proposed a political divide. That could happen.
