The rifle is a Browning stainless A-Bolt, caliber unknown. We dont know for sure, but the barrel probably became obstructed when the shooter allowed the gun to rest muzzle down on the ground, so some mud collected in the bore. Below, weve grabbed five frames from the key section of the video. You can see the barrel split into two segments. This shooter, who was NOT wearing eye protection, was uninjured. He is is lucky that the action held and no metal shards blew backwards.

This guy is much luckier than you were!
Lucky indeed.
Holy Crap!
Did he get the elk?
I saw a .50 cal percussion rifle do that, he didn’t have the ball seated all the way.
People just don’t realize how much trouble you can get in if your balls are not properly seated.
Ain’t nothing some duck tape can’t fix.....
I’d had to take a shower after that happened to me...This guy better thank God for his fortune.
This is one of my favorites. (make sure your sound is on)

Okay, for those who are clueless about guns—what exactly happened here?
Yeah. The reaction is making think the video is not what it appears to be.
"That's just stupid. Here's how it's done."
That’s a fact!
I also never shoot without eye protection and was wearing such that day thanks goodness.
Barrel obstruction, bad bullet/powder combination, double load of powder...take yer pick.
I have the same gun in .270 with a BOSS muzzle brake. I always, ALWAYS pull the bolt and visually inspect the barrel before shooting (and never put the thing face down in the mud, either, LOL). Lucky SOB.
Wow, thank you.
I tend to think there is more to it than mud.
I blew up a shotgun once. But it was a special ‘Hand Load’ 12 guage with double the powder and half the wadding and extra shot.
I’d be willing to bet this guy hand loaded this round with some kind of really hot propellant and the heaviest bullet he could find.
