As Barry continues to screw over the United States and more people start experiencing the consequences of his actions, they are going to start asking how this could have happened and the legitimacy of his presidency is going to point straight at his Constitutional eligibility for the office.

Then Mr. Too Secret about His Past will wish he had said early on, "So what if my dad wasn't a U.S. citizen? So what if I was born in Kenya and my mother, as the sole parent with a U.S. citizenship, was too young under then-current U.S. law to confer citizenship on me? So what if I was adopted by a foreign national and, under the law at the time, gave up my U.S. citizenship, if I actually had it, when my mother had to renounce hers to marry Lolo and become an Indonesian citizen? Did I have anything to do with any of this? Should I be forbidden to run for the presidency and you be forbidden to vote for me because of what I had no control over and because of outmoded laws?"

Maybe he could have gotten away with it for a little longer if he had tried this right before the election, though he then would have admitted to something publicly that would have given many others legal grounds to have him thrown off the ticket.

If he had looked like Al Sharpton and sounded like Jesse Jackson, he'd never have made it. Instead, he looked innocently Doogie-like in a The Gods Must Be Crazy way and sounded like Dan Rather or, as Joe Biden said, "he was clean and articulate." Combine this with the fear of looking racist for not voting for him and the then widely-held though contradictory beliefs among his target audience that a president really couldn't have that much impact and that anything was better than the police state of Bush/Cheney and he was good for tens of millions of votes right there.

Yes, though that would fit in with the belief that one guy really couldn't do that much damage and, so, not voting for McCain (and others on his ticket) to "send the GOP a message" rather than keeping a proven radical out was a wise use of a vote.
