Here is video in five parts of an amazing series of World War II Color videos that covers the period 1937-1941, with the final part ending with the entrance of the United States into the war. It is very unusual to see color video from that period, and these videos are full of color footage of the grand Nazi rallies in the late 1930's, to the Blitzkreig that rolled across Europe in 1939 and 1940; the German bombing of London, and the German offensive against Russia. If you go to archive.org there’s dozens of public domain videos from the WW2 era you can download. Most of it is government propaganda on both sides but still is historically interesting if only to see how they viewed the world at the time.

A friend of my dads was at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7 and had a color 16mm movie camera. I remember him taking out the film and showing footage he took in the immediate aftermath of the attack. I hope that film wasn’t sent to the dump by careless heirs.

Years ago a real estate friend asked me to “escort” her to a very large boarded-up house that she was previewing.

We got into the attic that was filled with old belongings and I noticed a box of books with a diary at the top. Naturally, I thumbed through it and came across 20 or so well-written pages describing a late 1930’s summer vacation in Europe by the author, a 20 year old female college student.

She described in some detail what was happening in the various countries and remarked several times about the numerous, “strikingly handsome” and very polite young German Army officers that would approach her.

Had I not listened to the wise voices in my head, I would have slipped the diary into my pocket.
