What Exactly Is Idolatry?

What does it mean to be an idolater? Idolatry may seem like a sin that modern people do not commit. But idolatry is not just bowing down to idols; it is trusting in what one has made, and therefore, in one’s own power as creator or sustainer. If we say we worship God but put our trust in bank accounts, homes, businesses, and organizations, then we are idolaters

“Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshipping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

It is the obsequious fealty paid by the mainstream media to a false god, Barack Obama.

2 : immoderate attachment or devotion to something

From the article:
“If we say we worship God but put our trust in bank accounts, homes, businesses, and organizations, then we are idolaters”

Say whaa . . . ?

Do we worship those bank accounts, homes, businesses and organizations? No? Then it’s not idolatry, is it? What exactly would Lori have us do? Move back out to the desert? I worship God over all of those things, but I think there’s room for both God and bank accounts in my life. And yes, I worry about money! That makes me smart and responsible, not idolatrous.

What Exactly Is Idolatry?

Humanism directs man’s attention to himself and a lot of the left subscribe to this ‘philosophy’.

I worship God over all of those things

You are not an idolater. An idolater places those things above their relationship with God. Those listed items are indeed idols to many people, along with numerous other things, or people. We all have need of bank accounts, jobs, homes and such, but they must have their proper place in the list of priorities, after God.

Worshiping celebrities and trusting in politicians over God is also another form of idolatry.

It is true that having those things do not make us idolators. It is when those things have us that we become idolators. The Apostle Paul said, ".. What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it? "(1Cor 4:7) When God graciously gives us these things and we act like "...my power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth"(De 8:17) then we become idolatrous.

Money is not the root of all evil....loving money is, but God told us to be wise with money...He tells us to tithe 10% to him, it doesn’t see that a bank account is sinful...but to find sin where there is none is sinful. (as I was told by a priest decades ago) scruples within the spiritual life is sinful...

An idol is anything you place above God, period. “Thou shalt have no other Gods before me”...that’s idolatry..
