The Senate passed a $2 billion extension of cars for clunkers sending the extension to the president. The House passed it last week.

Pedal to the metal, Congress sent President Obama legislation Thursday night with an additional $2 billion for "cash for clunkers," the economy-boosting rebate program that caught the fancy of car buyers and instantly increased sales for an auto industry long mired in recession.

The Senate approved the money on a 60-37 vote after administration officials said an initial $1 billion had run out in only 10 days. The House voted last week to keep alive the program, which gives consumers up to $4,500 in federal subsidies if they trade in their cars for new, more energy-efficient models.

Why not cash for washer and dryer? I don’t need a new car but my wife has been bugging me for a new washer/dryer. We have already given the auto industry like $37 billion.

The real question is not how fast the government went through the money, but how that money will create a artificial market. Once the money is gone, the market will collapse along with the suppliers of that market. So much for stimulus. This prime the pump economic policy has never worked. All it has done is waste a bunch of money.

Bullcrap. Robbing Peter in order to pay Paul does not boost the economy. Ever. It may help secure Paul's vote, though ...

Cash for Clunkers is an awful, wasteful program.

The United States borrows money from China -—

Then we use that money to DESTROY wealth here in the United States!

Perfectly good automobiles are being ruined, on purpose!

The wealth of America goes DOWN every time a perfectly good piece of property is ruined.

This is bad economics.

This is bad, environmentally, since “recycling” is nearly impossible, after the vehicle is destroyed!

No, no, no.

They put $2K on a credit card they can’t pay for, and took out a home equity loan on the house they can’t pay for, to pay for a car they can’t pay for...
