People who so visciously abuse animals...abuse humans too..usually children or anyone weaker. Vick just hadn’t got caught on that yet...and a couple yrs in prison is not intensive therapy and rehab to change that personality.

Football is not about ‘giving the guy a second chance”..its about money, pure and simple.
Hope it hurts the Eagles.

Vick is disgusting -this wasn’t a one time screw up - he tortured and killed dogs for at least 6 years - it was a side business.

The man has done his time, he apologized profusely, and the private sector (The NFL Eagles) offered him employment.

He has a Christian mentor (Tony Dungy) guiding him...

Please FReepers, be Christians stop passing judgment on this human being and let him resume his life and play some football.

Cue CBS' NFL theme song....

The sickness is not me. The outrage belongs to Gov’t.

Gov’t is using your animal farm mentality to take away the freedoms of a private property owner.

A dog, cat, tree, fish, chicken are property. That’s all.

Save the outrage for the killing of humans.

Give the man a chance. He did his time. For a person having nothing, going to prison may not be so bad but what Vick did cost him at least $100 million, lost fan adoration, lost friends and some of the most productive years of his career, not to mention going to jail.

To claim all that wouldn't have a sobering effect on a person is without basis. Give the man a chance.

This is an interesting topic. We (my husband and I were talking about this yesterday and tonight...due to the Vick 60 minutes interview, him being signed to the Eagles...local pro football but we aren’t Eagles fans).

This, Vick’s story, got lots of airtime around here. It’s just interesting also because there are pro ball players who murdered people who didn’t have this kind of coverage.

An interesting legal theory, but a wrong one. There are different types of property, and what you are allowed to do with them varies by law. If you don’t like our laws against animal abuse, you are free to seek another homeland where the laws are more in accordance with your theories.

I don't either but prize fighting and more recently MMA cage fighting is not much different IMO.

Dog and cock fighting have been part of rural subculture for a long time, that Vick got caught up in it is too bad for him. It sure cost him a lot. Never-the-less, he paid his fines, did his time and deserves a chance to show that he's a changed man.

Let’s not forget that part of running that dog fighting “business” included running an illegal multi-state gambling ring. And let’s also not forget that traditionally fighting dogs are “trained” on stolen animals.

There’s a lot more to dog fighting than killing your “property”.

Like I said we disagree. I might not support dog fighting, but I support the sovereignty of a private property owner.

Another incorrect legal theory. Private property owners do not hold sovereign rights over their property. Individuals may hold a number of rights in property they own, called a "bundle of rights," but those rights are limited by the actual sovereign power--the state and federal governments. (Or, if you prefer, the People acting through their representatives in the state and federal governments.)

Justinian said property is "ius utendi et abutendi re sua, quatenus iuris ratio patitur.: The right of using and abusing your thing, within the rule of the law. Black defines it as, "an aggregate of rights which are guaranteed and protected by the government [... including] not only ownership and possession but also the right of use and enjoyment for lawful purposes." Founding father James Wilson admitted three degrees of property--possession; possession and use; possession, use, and disposition.

Throughout the history of Christendom, from Roman to American Law, the concept of property has included legal limitations. Just because one possesses a thing does not give one the sovereign right to do whatever one will to a thing.

I enjoy hunting. I don't want the PETA mob to take away my ability to kill an animal. Or take away my ability to fish on my property. One person may perceive fat people riding horses as abusive or keeping a bird locked in a cage as another form of it.

So you would be a pro-slaver from back in the day. After all, slaves were property; bought, sold, traded just like any other property.
I'm as much a property rights advocate as you claim to be, but you're way over the top here.

There is no defense for what Vick did. Shows the lack of moral character by Andy Reid and owner Jeffrey Lurie will sink to sign somebody this sadistic - and for over one million dollars. It is not like Vick smoked pot or wrote a bad check. Instead, his actions were those of a perverted sociopath.

So you like some laws and not others - private property rights is still a law imposed by the government - so it is "higher" than a law against cruelty?

What about Sharia Law? Do you respect the rights of Muslim men to kill their wives or daughters since it is "the law"?

BGHater,

Isn’t it wonderful how the FR animal rights zealots put words into your mouth?

I realize you’re just having fun with them, but please don’t take any of these whack-jobs seriously.

Many of them believe animals are entitled to the same rights as humans. They see nothing wrong with animal control officers speeding through neighborhoods with sirens blaring to save a bunch of stupid cats. At the time of his conviction, there were many posts calling for Vick to be put to death.

They’re all nuts. So have fun playing with them, but please don’t take any of them seriously.

Animal rights zealots? Can you point out where any of us on this thread are animal rights zealots?

I'm curious why anyone would defend the actions of a man who made money by torturing animals? As a Christian, do you not believe the Bible teaches against cruelty?

Proverbs 12:10 A righteous man has regard for the life of his animal, But even the compassion of the wicked is cruel.

Not only is he a POS if he does not see the difference, but he is also very stupid.

The reason we have these animal cruelty laws is not only because some PETA members complained...It is so that the legal system can deal with such violent, viscious persons as research has shown that these type of disturbed..very disturbed—individuals have, or will , show the same behavior to any human that is weaker. The legal system also allows at least an investigation, with possible mandated treatment.

I think BGhater is trying to show how “macho’ he is. Wow, I am so impressed...a real man.

I am not so impressed that JUST a sobering effect of jail time and loss of money and friends changes what is basically a violent, sadistic personality.

Your analogy between prizefighting and dogfighting is , at best , absurd.

I can’t wait to see the “changed man”...uh, lets see, take a violent, sadistic thug in an expensive suit...throw him in jail a couple years and VOILA! Out he comes, a “changed “man...Usually that is NOT the case. they just are a little less obvious or go back again and again..the next time for killing his wife, or child abuse.

Our entire prison system is testimony to that. That is just reality.

If the NFL would just say,”Hey, he might make us some money.’ THAT at least would be honest...but this 2 yr fast track to “redemption”..I ain’t buying it.

I agree with your succinct post.

But according to the NFL....”Hey, he’s a changed man.”: A quieter, gentler, sociopath.

Its ironic that our society would not say that about the “average” thug. Guess, if you’re a thug and can play football for the major leagues, oh, well...we’ll just put you in an Italian suit, have you apologize for your “mistake” on 60 mins and hurry up....Its almost game time!

You obviously are extremely uneducated about the behaviors of those who abuse animals and the connection to their abuse of humans.

There are no animal control officers racing thru neighborhoods....

as for putting Vick to death...we’ll have “fun playing “with the Macho Posters if Vick gets the death penalty if he moves on to humans from animals. Guess all the statistics on people abusing animals and then abusing or killing people ...well, they must be nuts too! ha.

Why don’t you guys do some research, or just read Dahmer’s biography, then come back and post.
