Today, my daughter, FReeper Anoreth (since 11/29/03) graduates from Coast Guard Basic Training.
We're also celebrating "The Boy," son of FReeper AnAmericanMother, who is graduating today from Marine Corps Basic.
And "ForgotenKnight," grandson of Monkey Face, recently deployed with a Stryker unit to Afghanistan.
Other FReepers with children (grandchildren, nieces and nephews, etc.) in the military, please join us in celebrating all our family members who are serving our country in the military.

N.W.E. was mostly Scotch-Irish - married a Dublin Irish girl. We really got around, didn’t we?

My family history suggests that the Dublin Irish had some money :-).

Official congratulations!
If you run into a certain puffed-up new Marine, dump a bucket of fish on his head if you have one handy . . . . < g >

Only likely if the Boy is posted to the Pacific Coast.

Well, N.W.E.'s father in law was pretty well-doing, but all gg grandmother's dowry was in slaves and cotton, so THAT didn't turn out to be much of an inheritance . . . . although interestingly enough at their Golden Wedding anniversary her personal maid was still around (and a guest of honor at the dinner as recounted in the local paper).
Everybody in our family was dead broke after the War. All N.W.E. was left with was one blind mule and his cavalry horse Doctor, and my other gg grandfather on that side, who had been a banker and lawyer, became a teamster and hauled stuff with two leftover artillery horses . . . .

Yeah, but if it should happen it would be a GREAT opportunity . . . .
No telling where he may end up. Even the Marines aren't sure at this point. He has 10 days' leave, then he reports to the School of Infantry at Camp Lejeune for 2 months.
My daughter just left Lejeune after working all summer for a civilian contractor for the USMC. But their paths didn't quite cross . . . .

My grandmother’s great-uncles, the Hoppers, pioneer settlers of Shelby County MO, were all in the Union Missouri Volunteers. Grandpa’s people, the Wrights, came out from Illinois after the War. Nobody had much out there, other than land. We’re related to the Pershings, Gen. Black Jack’s folks, but they didn’t have anything, either; and Admiral Grace Hopper.

We had some cousins who went out West and were never heard from again . . .
Our branch of the family were stay-at-homes by comparison. They came through Virginia and East Tennessee, got as far west as Alabama and never any further - some even backtracked to Georgia.

Off to bed . . . it’s a school night, and I have to separate the dogs who are quarreling over a couple of toys.
