I think it’s an act of respect to mock her. After all, are we supposed to talk about her as if she’s gone?

I don’t see any mocking here. Elizabeth Edwards has made herself a public figure, pops up on TV regularly (was recently on Larry King about health care for example) and even wrote a book about her husband’s affair. Commentary about her and what she does is fair game, illness or impending death notwithstanding. If she wants to be left alone she can take herself out of the public eye.
Aren't we all dying? Inevitably, life will come to an end for each of us, no matter what we do. I do not believe that the shielding someone gets from criticism should be related to the speed at which that person is meeting the end.
