For the last several years Ive been despairing over what to do about my hair. I used to wear it long, but it grew too thin, so I briefly tried wearing it short with a rat tail (remember those?). I quickly decided that this looked ridiculous and clipped it off. Grew it out long again, whacked it off short, back and forth. By the time I hit fifty the top of my head was pretty much a clear landing strip for insects and small birds.
I have several friends who shave their heads and all of them are happy with it. I considered trying it more than once but chickened out each time. Last Saturday night however, I decided to take the plunge. Perhaps Id become obsessive about it. I spent an hour looking at images of some of my favorite action heroes with shaved heads, along with photos of some of my friends who shave theirs (you know who you are). What the hell, I decided. If I dont like it, itll grow back in a few days.

I hope I don’t have to start doing that. I’ll be 24 pretty soon and I already have a receding hairline.

Shaved works well on some heads, not so well on others. Some look tough, others look dopey.
Some people simply wear hats.

When I was a high school senior I was voted "Most Likely to Recede." ;-)

The first time I saw one of these head shavers in the store, I said "What the ????" But it looks like it might really work.
The ear rings are definitely a bad idea.

That’s what I did. Shaved my head, grew a goatee. I’m 5’9”, 200 lbs, and my body fat is 15%. I like this look. And I’ve had the same bottle of shampoo for over a year, lol.

my advice: buy a toupee, live in a closet, whip yourself repeatedly, lock your doors, never venture outside, and look at yourself in the mirror and repeat after me, “i’m a good lookin’ dude, it don’t matter if i have hair, i’m a big boy now.....”

I was thinking about that, too. Just a dab of shampoo to keep my scalp and goatee clean. Money saved!

This is one small mercy - if my father is any guide, I'll go to my grave with a full head of hair. But I've always liked the shaved head look, considered shaving my head a couple of times back in my early 20s during my goatee and ear-ring phase.
Some people simply wear hats.
Hats work well as fashion, not so well as camouflage for balding guys IMHO. It's obvious to everyone that the hat is being worn constantly to hide a bald spot and it draws attention to the guy's baldness. Ron Howard did it for a while in his public appearances. My wife used to wonder how often he had to clean his hat.

I shaved my head once; it looked awesome.
It took me awhile to get used to the feel of my pillow, though.

My wife used to wonder how often he had to clean his hat.I think he showered with it on, which explained the "sweat beads" running down his cheeks.

When you shave your head like I do, you don’t have a bad hair day.

I miss having a full head of hair, but bald on top and gray on the sides wasn’t making it for me.
I can’t imagine a toupee. I once worked with a guy who wore one and it was the phoniest thing I ever saw.

I have seen both looks you describe, but there are also two others, the misshapen dome, and the, er, “dented” one.

A receding hairline at 24! Well, you might want to start a hat collection.
At your age, I had an extremely thick head of hair and although my hair is now thinning a bit, I have a fine collection of hats. I am 60, so the sides are gray, but I still get to brush it. LOL Good luck.
BTW, If your grandfather on your moms side is/was bald... buy the hats soon. ;>)

I’ve seen those two too - often accentuated with the ‘criminal’ look, which sometimes include interesting scars.

"like this?"
OMG! That's scary.
I gotta get to bed. Lotsa work to do tomorrow. Enjoyed it, ya'll!
