Point Out Liberal Bias in the NY Times, Be Called a Homophobe

I’ve heard pundits talk about it happening. I’ve seen it happen to groups of people, like Tea Partiers or the Republican National Convention. But until this morning, it never happened to me personally.

Yesterday a gay Facebook friend linked to this NY Times piece:

January 4, 2010
Americans’ Role Seen in Uganda Anti-Gay Push
By JEFFREY GETTLEMAN

KAMPALA, Uganda — Last March, three American evangelical Christians, whose teachings about “curing” homosexuals have been widely discredited in the United States, arrived here in Uganda’s capital to give a series of talks. ...

The theme of the event, according to Stephen Langa, its Ugandan organizer, was “the gay agenda — that whole hidden and dark agenda” — and the threat homosexuals posed to Bible-based values and the traditional African family.

For three days, according to participants and audio recordings, thousands of Ugandans, including police officers, teachers and national politicians, listened raptly to the Americans, who were presented as experts on homosexuality. ...

My FB friend didn’t mention that last part; the goal of the post, after promoting awareness of the travesty, was pinning the blame on religious Republicans for fomenting the intolerance and hate in Uganda. This is where I stepped in:

I’ve heard about this. Let’s see if next week, Gettleman has an article exposing Mahmoud Ahmedinejad publicly hanging of homosexuals in Iran, while gallivanting around the globe to places like Columbia Univ. and Copenhagen with impunity.

Not that I endorse what Evangelicals are doing in Uganda. Just looking for some fair and balanced reporting from the NY Times. (Oh, I forgot. They don’t do that anymore.)

The response was shocking: My FB friend accused me of dismissing and diminishing the value of the article and then hoped that my lambasting of the Times wasn’t “homophobia talking.”

Being called a racist, sexist homophobe is the default charge leveled against anyone who criticizes left wing orthodoxy.

I always respond with a Yawn.

I've come to learn that it means you've won the argument. If they had a logical, thoughtful, or relevant response, they'd use it.

Same thing when you're accused of being a Palin-bot, or anti-palin-bot, Bush-bot, Obama-bot, whatever. It means you won. May as well just walk away as there's no point in further discussion.

oh ! By the way !
- - you may have noticed that I quite being polite and respectful of others (especially lefties) some time ago.

From here on out you are going to hear a lot of 4 letter words and associated references to those who claim that it is we (the right) that is intolerant.

I have become very intolerant but it is due to the prejudgments and accusations made by the left that has turned me into a foul mouthed son of a (you know what).

Get used to it.

I don’t see anything wrong with being called a homophobe. I’m kinda proud of it.

Its gotten so bad that I won’t vote for a candidate who has not been called racist, sexist, and/or homophobic. If a candidate has not been called one of these epithets, he is either gutless or unprincipled.
