Email to Publix-They nixed Pearl Harbor in favor of Islamic New Year

I noticed that December 7th is highlighted as the Islamic new year with no mention of Pearl Harbor Day.

This was an important date in the history of our nation that affected all of us from that day forward in so many ways. The sacrifice that our grandparents made during those war years influenced how children learned to live their lives...and then there were the those fathers, sons, and husbands that never came back.

Shame on you for deleting part of American history from your calendar in favor of political correctness. I plan to publish this letter on several forums and social networking sites. I also plan to give Winn Dixie at least 50% of my business that was in 2009 exclusively yours. Their stores may not be as nice and their associates not as well trained, but they are unabashedly a proud American company. I am not sure that I can the same about Publix.

Regards xxxx xxxxxx

I heard about this on a talk radio show this morning and checked my calendar...sure enough they were right. It further ticks me off since Dec 7 is my birthday!!!

(oops, here is the full text of the email)

I have shopped at Publix for 15 years. Your stores are clean and your employees always go the extra mile. But someone in your corporate office really dropped the ball.

I was recently handed a copy of your 2010 calendar at my local Publix store. Much to my I noticed that December 7th is highlighted as the Islamic new year with no mention of Pearl Harbor Day.

Face it, America is over rated.

Dec 7, 1941 sparked a national mobilization of the likes that the world has never seen. That certain Sunday was the beginning of the USA’s accent ion as a world power. So events or references that leads to America being “Number 1” must be “shushed”. History is being rewritten.

In 1958, at a time when public concern over civil defense was heightened by the Soviet Union’s successful satellite launches and ICBM tests, the Eisenhower administration proclaimed December 7 to be National Civil Defense Day as a means of increasing public awareness of the need for passive, nonmilitary measures designed to protect civilians in case of an attack. Leo A. Hoegh, Eisenhower’s Director of Civil and Defense Mobilization, declared on the first National Civil Defense Day in 1958 that the US must “match our strong military force with a strong civil defense. This will give the nation total defense and will make us so strong that no one will dare to attack us.”

In many communities, National Civil Defense Day featured the sounding of air raid sirens, civil defense drills, and public displays of anti-aircraft missiles. However, enthusiasm for National Civil Defense Day seems to have quickly faded after the Kennedy administration took office—perhaps the New Frontiersmen didn’t want to act too “provocative” toward the Soviets.
