AP Misses That Michelle’s White House Veggies Weren’t Used on TV

The Associated Press had an extensive story reporting on First Lady Michelle Obama's White House garden on Jan 13. The story included the tidbit that her veggies were the main ingredients during a recent Iron Chef TV show episode. The AP happily reported that the crops "inspired a culinary showdown" on the TV show and reported that the challenge to the chefs was to "whip up five dishes using anything from the garden." But the AP did not report the truth that none of the produce used on the show actually came from the White House garden at all.

The AP reported about the taping of the show and said that the chefs used the White House veggies...

I REFUSED to watch that episode of Iron Chef. I get enough propaganda from Food Network as it is.

Wasn’t it reported last Summer that the garden soil was contaminated from lead paint scrapped off of the White House over the years from every time the White House was repainted?

Yea, thats what I remember reading. This whole Iron Chef episode is a dog & pony show for the Obamas.

More likely it was contaminated from all the crap that spews from within the walls of the WH.

I didnt watch that episode on purpose. I don’t think the Food Network is any place for politics. I’ve been sick of it for a while anyway. It’s become more entertainment.

I saw parts of the Iron Chef episode. It was disgusting. You had several great chefs, doing amazing things in the kitchen, putting years of experience into their dishes and the WHOLE episode seemed to go like this:

"Fabulous vegetables ... superb carrots, I've never seen anything like these ... It's all the vegetable, you can't miss with beauties like these ... vegetables ... vegetables ... beautiful ... so fresh ... amazing peppers ... "

At times it verged on parody for sucking up to Obama.

Actually, I watched the episode, but missed the first 15 minutes or so. Except for a few quick references to the garden, the Obamas were nowhere to be seen. That was fine by me, and I enjoyed watching the battle. Natalie Coughlin was one of the judges and looked quite nice. Hadn’t seen her since the Olympics.

Nah, it was a former occupant of the White House who had the lawns fertilized with a sewage-based fertilizer containing lead and other heavy metals. Can you guess who it was? No, not George W. Bush - it was Bill Clinton.

The fertilizer leached in to the soil, causing it to have a lead content of 93 parts per million (ppm). The EPA advises that people not raise veggies in soil with more that 100 ppm, even though the threshold for dangerous levels of lead is 300 ppm.

You can find dozens of articles gushing about Michelle's "organic garden". Well guess what - that garden (nor any of its produce) cannot be labeled "organic". The Obamas claimed to use only organic fertilizers and pesticides, which seems to cause the confusion. But did the White House correct the press about it? Heck no.

Michelle was also bragging that the start-up cost of the garden was less than $200 (for the seeds and soil). First, this is as hard to swallow as those lead-laced heirloom tomatoes. Second, that only covers the initial materials and apparently does not include the costs of all those fancy fertilers and pesticides, plus the labor of a full-time staff of landscapers, horticulturalists, botanists and whoever else toiled endlessly over Queen Michelle's precious sweet potatoes. I would guesstimate the total cost actually ran into the tens of thousands of dollars for her little photo-op garden. Which puts the unit price of each head of lettuce far above what you would pay at the local supermarket (which has real organic vegetables)

So to recap, Farmer Michelle's organic garden (which isn't organic because the Clintons poisoned it) produced all the vegetables for the Iron Chef program (even though those weren't the vegetables the chefs actually used) and they cost less than $200 to grow (which was actually more like thousands of $$$).

So many lies, so little time.

Michelle Obama’s toxic veggie nightmare: White House organic garden polluted with sludge

When First Lady Michelle Obama planted an organic vegetable garden on the White House lawn in March 2009, she hoped to both set an example of healthy eating and to grow tasty edibles for her daughters and husband. But Michelle’s organic dream has been dashed by a nasty toxic legacy lurking in the soils of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. It turns out that a previous Presidential gardening team had used sewage sludge for fertilizer.

This is a fairly common practice with one huge problem. Sewage sludge tends to be laced with anything that people pour down the drain and often contains heavy metals. Not surprisingly, the National Park Service tested the dirt beneath Michelle’s garden and found the plot has highly elevated levels of lead averaging 93 parts per million. That’s below the 400 ppm that the Environmental Protection Agency says is a threat to human health. But I’d wager that Sasha, Malia and Barack won’t be getting arugula or tomatoes from this garden any time soon.
