Check Out This Video of a Killer Whale Killing & Eating a Penguin During a Show @ SeaWorld

Check out this video of what happened last year during the "Believe" show at San Diego's SeaWorld, a pelican decided to drop in for the show. Unfortunately for the pelican, the whales decided to take a brake from the show and have the pelican for lunch instead. The person who captured this video was in the right place at the right time. Unfortunately for the pelican it was in the wrong place at the wrong time. During a portion of the show where a young child it introduced to a friendly whale, the pelican landed onto the pool. Suddenly out of nowhere one of the whales lunged at it from underneath the water, caught it in it's jaws, and dragged the bird under the water, thus drowning it. The other whales in the pool, with the exception of the whale that was at the front of the pool with the little girl from the audience, all disappeared under the water ignoring their trainers.

Throughout the ordeal the show's music continued to blare out of the speakers, but it was obvious to the audience the show had not gone as planned. Some of the trainers tried to continue on as if nothing had happened and continued the dance moves. Meanwhile the whales still hadn't surfaced and had their catch at the bottom of the pool. Eventually one whale did surface, as did the limp body of the pelican. The whales then pushed it around the surface for a while and then tore it apart in front of the audience.

Eventually the trainers got back the attention of the whales and managed to lure them backstage to the holding pen, leaving bits of pelican floating around in the pool. Once the trainers had the whales securely locked up, they then went about retrieving the Pelican parts from the pool. Since the show had been cut short, the bewildered audience responded with clapping and cheering as each part of the Pelican was retrieved from the pool.

While SeaWorld tries to humanize these deadly creatures for the spectators, this video proves that they are still wild animals and their "Killer Whale" instincts are sill very acute.

I’m pretty sure it was a pelican, not a penguin.

“Animals are friendly. Really they are. Could we get a little girl to pet the nice polar bear?”

Left lives in their own little world.

The Pelican

A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His mouth can hold more than his belly can,
He can hold in his beak,
Enough food for a week!
I’m damned if I know how the hell he can!

but it sure is no PENGUIN, english.

Exactly. My late parents were visiting us for Easter one year (we live in the Seattle area, they lived in Chicago). We decided to go to the Woodland Park Zoo with the kids one day. They have an enclosure for the lions and a place where people can see the lion enclosure through a glassed off enclosure.

As we are standing there looking at a couple of female lions, a very dumb duck brought her brood with her to swim in the little pond that the lions got their water from. Well, one of the lions decided that duckling was a good snack, she snuck up on the ducklings and wham!, goodbye duckling, nothing but few feathers flying.

There was an audible gasp by the people who were there with their kids, but it was an education.

Exactly. I remember Rush saying something about this a few years ago...specifically about animals. He recalled how personifying animals (i.e. cartoons, advertising, etc.) would be a bad idea because you were essentially teaching kids that the monkey in the cage is friendly, the snake on the ground sticks its tongue out because it wants a kiss, and the tiger in the jungle is just a big pussie cat waiting to be cuddled.

A whale is a whale of course of course
And no one can change a killer whale of course
Unless of course lunch drops in on the famous Shamu whale.

Note to self:

Do NOT make a pet out of anything that has “killer” in their name.

Smart creatures, Orcas.

I was in the Gasteanu channel (Juneau) a few decades ago on a friends boat. We were fishing for salmon.

I hooked one, brought it to the transom of the boat and reached down to pull it up into the boat (heavy line, small boat, no net needed).

Imagine my surprise when an Orca pulled the salmon out of my hand and took off with it. the orca could have EASILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! taken my:

Hand
Arm
Entire body

BUT, it knew that the fish was enough.

Remember in the movie JAWS when Roy Scheider has the shark come to the back of the boat and he says: ‘We're gonna need a bigger boat?’ That's how I reacted. Times two.

True story.

There were 2 stories about killer whales today, one with a penguin (who survived), the other with a pelican who didn’t.

Knowing you as I do, I suspect you did not watch “the kill.”

The whales behaved much as dogs would if they happened to catch a stray bird or squirrel.
