Navigation systems deliver data from satellites that allow travelers, drivers, and military officials directions on locations and travel advice.
The third Beidou satellite will lift off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province at "an appropriate moment soon", atop a Long March-3C carrier, the center said on Friday in a statement.
Both the rocket and the satellite are now in sound condition and ready for launch, it said.
A new government-run website, www.beidou.gov.cn, was also launched on Friday. The website said that China aims to provide a positioning and navigation service by 2012 with a constellation of 12 Beidou satellites, covering the Asia-Pacific region.
But as only two have been launched so far, this means China has to launch 10 satellites in two to three years.
The system is expected to be completed with a constellation of 35 navigation satellites - five geo-stationary satellites and 30 non-geostationary satellites - and provide global service by 2020, the website said.
The Beidou system will rival the US-developed GPS, the EU's Galileo and Russia's Global Navigation Satellite System, experts said.
At present, nearly 200 million people worldwide are using GPS devices for positioning and navigation service, and GPS earns $120 billion a year, earlier reports said.

Anybody have a clue what these might be?
Seems to me they can presently use GPS and get all the benefits without paying for their own system. How will their own system provide additional economic benefit?
Once they have their own system, they can knock ours out of the sky and still know where they are.

One of these days, all these different satellites are gonna be bumping into each other. Either that, or the "weave" of satellites will be so thick up there, that we won't be able to get a rocket through anymore... LOL...
if you were the owner of the GPS system everyone used what would you have it do along with giving out gps signals? and if there were a war would you shut them off... or could you slow it down. or speed it up... or.. if every bit of naviagation was based on gps... what would you do as a nation state.. What would you add... the list is very very very long..

Having their own GPS would allow them to control the standards and design of the next generation of GPS receivers worldwide. Additionally, the Satellites would allow further 2-way data options, which can then be licensed or sold as an on-going service.
Since they already dominate in the manufacturing of GPS devices, control of standards along with the information content provided by the GPS system would be an immense competitive advantage to the Chinese electronics, cellphone, and areospace industries. So it means more jobs and more money for the Chinese.

The benefit to China will be the ability to guide its bombs and planes to hit Taiwan or India and won’t be affected if the USA tries to turn off our GPS to stop such guidance.
How's that work? Two systems are up so the Chinese automatically get to control all the ground systems?
That aside, I'll be quite surprised if the Chinese system can even remain competitive, much less be so much better it drives our system out of business.
If it was just the GPS system by itself, I would say China would have to struggle to maintain commercial competitiveness. However, the Chinese also own the majority of the GPS receiver manufacturing industry. Right now the receivers in Chinese manufactured Navigational systems, smartphones, hand-helds are all built to conform to GPS specifications defined by American Designers from the late 70s.
With their own Navigation Satellites, they could put in additional capabilities such as 2 way data links, or restricted levels of enhanced precision depending on geographical locale or place of manufacture. In effect, they could use their Satellite network to give their commercial manufactures a huge advantage over American and European GPS receiver manufacturers.
This is interesting.
