Duncan Hunter Interview 2/24/2010 – McCain v Hayworth, O’Reilly v 2A, w/cameo from Gunny Pop
AT&T | 2/24/10 | DH/NP/AJM

Posted on 02/24/2010 5:47:50 PM PST by pissant

AJM: Hello Congressman, how are you?

DH: Hello Jim. I’m doing great. But listen, I only have about 10 minutes here. I’m heading into a function in just a few minutes. So you’ll have to be fast.

AJM: OK. First of all, I have to tell you I won’t be able to make it to Idaho on Friday for your event. I have a First Aid/CPR class that is mandatory for my job, that has to be renewed every two years. So I’ll be here, in Seattle.

DH: Well, doggone it. It’ll be a lot of fun.

AJM: Are you driving up or flying?

DH: No, flying.

AJM: Are you going to be up there for the one day and flying back or are you staying up there with your brother?

DH: I think maybe 2 days. I think I’m coming in on Friday and think I’ll be there through Sunday or Monday afternoon.

AJM: Did you make it out to Arizona for the Lincoln Day….

DH: Yeah, helped Jesse Kelly out there, did a Lincoln Day thing.

AJM: Did you see JD Hayworth by chance?

DH: I didn’t see him. He wasn’t there. He was probably barnstorming around the state there.

AJM: Speaking of that, did he ever contact you?

DH: No, I haven’t talked to JD.

AJM: I’m surprised. I thought he’d be getting a hold of you.

That will be my first question, on a couple of races, this one included. I see McCain is veering to the right during this campaign, as usual. He made two claims this week that were just a little on the false side. One, that he never called for a ‘greenhouse gas’ cap. And the second one is that he was “misled” by Hank Paulson on the TARP bailout.

DH: (laughing) Really?

AJM: What do you think of those two little gems?

DH: (laughs). Well here’s what I’d say. Right now, I’m in the business of beating democrats. And I’m not getting involved in anything that takes our eye off the ball. And so getting after McCain – I’ve gotten after McCain hard, looking him right in the eye and getting after him in these debates during the presidential race – but I’m not interested in further beating up on him or any other republicans right now. I’m going into these districts where we are trying to get rid of dems, and trying to have an effect there.

AJM: So you’re not going to make an endorsement in that race, is that correct?

DH: No. McCain and JD are both old friends. They’ve both come out to San Diego and campaigned for me. Quite obviously, my position on illegal aliens, the border, global warming are much different than John’s and more closely aligned with JD.

Nonetheless, I’m using my ammo right now to try to make sure we change some of these democrat seats. They are both friends. My dad liked McCain a lot. I was the only guy in California who initially endorsed him in 2000 – previous to his nutty amnesty – while the other guys all were for Bush. But they are both friends, they both campaigned for me, and I think it would be a disservice to that loyalty, to those friendships to formally endorse either one of them over the other. But JD would make a fine Senator, I don’t doubt.

AJM: Fair enough. So I won’t ask you about that anymore.

DH: Good (laughs). This may be a short conversation (laughing). What’s your next one?

AJM: Well the other one is for the Senate seat, the right to challenge to Babs Boxer for her senate seat, and that is the race between Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlitt Packard lady, and State senator Chuck DeVore.

DH: I just don’t know them. I haven’t heard either one of them yet. I’m doing a bunch of other stuff right now, so I haven’t had a chance to focus on that thing.

AJM: I’ll ask you again in a few weeks when it heats up.

DH: Yeah, let’s wait til this thing tunes up a little. And what’s you last question (laughing)

AJM: (laughs) Well, I’ll get you to comment on this one. Last week, Mr. Bill O’Reilly, the most popular TV pundit on cable news, had somebody on and Bill made the statement that in an emergency, such as Hurricane Katrina, a terror attack or some such, that it is definitely OK, or the right of the State or City or feds to confiscate individual firearms. I’d like to get your take on that statement.

DH: He’s wrong. I think they DON’T have a constitutional right to do that. Rather, people have the absolute constitutional right to maintain their firearms. Unless you’re one of the looters! In Katrina, for example, there were idiots that shot at the rescue copters. Obviously they have the right to subdue criminal elements. But that’s not dependent in any way on exigency.

In Katrina, you obviously had a series of crimes that occurred during the aftermath of the hurricane, and it was too bad a lot of the police ran away. They should have been there to carry out the crackdown on the criminals. You’ve got to have a few police officers to mind the store, not take guns away from the residents. In fact, Katrina was as good of argument as any to make sure that the residents remained armed to protect themselves. A lot of the policemen went AWOL. I don’t know what percentage it was, but it was substantial. Were you aware of that?

AJM: Yeah, I am.

DH: So when police go AWOL, it’s more reason than ever to have the citizens exercise their constitutional right to protect themselves, regardless what Mr. O’Reilly thinks.

AJM: Absolutely. Did you get a chance to catch any of the CPAC stuff that went on last weekend?

DH: No. All I saw was a blip of Romney, but I didn’t get a chance really. I’m on the board of CPAC, but I just did not have the time to focus on it. I thought Romney had a good one-liner. I think Gingrich picked it up later, in which they said that “the Obama Administration hates free enterprise and the private sector so much, that they are soon going to have a chance to experience it for themselves”.

AJM: (laughs)

DH: I thought that was good.

AJM: A very clever line. I will tell you that April Popaditch, Nick’s wife, got a hold of me.

DH: Good. In five minutes I’m meeting with them.

AJM: Are you?

DH: I’m just pulling into the restaurant now where we are going to meet and go over some things.

AJM: One of the things we are going to do is have Nick, he’s a freeper, he’s going to get onto FreeRepublic and do kind of a cyber interview, so to speak, like you did a couple years ago. Maybe generate some interest in his campaign. I know he’s very popular there already on that site.

DH: That’s great. That’s great. You know he’s a tremendous guy.

AJM: Yeah. So I got a chance to email back and forth with his wife, who seems very nice as well.

DH: She’s wonderful. You know, she’s very smart. You know she’s a Pomo Indian?

AJM: I had no idea.

DH: And she’s the quintessential gunnery Sergeant’s wife with that great common sense and grounding with the capability to handle all those problems that your young enlisted families have. A Marine family sticks together when they are going to war. When I say family, I’m talking about the unit and all the associated and related family members.

AJM: So I’m going to do my best to generate excitement for Nick in the cyber world, and on FreeRepublic, which is the largest conservative forum in the country. He’s already got a following there, a little bit. So we’re going to make that happen.

Tell him I said “hi”, tell him I’ll be contacting him….

DH: One second, I’ll put the Gunnery Sergeant on. Hold on one sec….

(inaudible explanation to Nick of who is on the phone)

NP: How you doing Jim, Nick Popaditch here.

AJM: Hey Nick, how are you? I got the opportunity to exchange emails with April last week.

NP: OK, great.

AJM: Whether you know it or not, she volunteered you to do a cyber interview on FreeRepublic.

NP: Oh, great, great. I think she did mention that. When are we doing it?

AJM: Whenever you guys want. It could be next week, the week after, anytime. What I’d like to do is, after we settle on a day, is to announce it several days ahead of time to get more interest up. And then have at it. I don’t need to explain to you right now how it works, but it’s pretty simple. It’s not going to require that you guys do much of anything other than type out answers to questions.

NP: OK. Do I have to type fast?

AJM: No, no. What we did with Duncan Hunter, when he was running for president – and damn if he shouldn’t be president right now…

NP: Exactly (laughs). I agree

AJM: What we did with Hunter, is we sent him a list of questions he answered ahead of time, six or eight questions he answered ahead of time, and those were posted as the “thread”, and then he logged on with his son Sam and answered the follow up questions that people had. He answered maybe 10 more questions within 45 minutes. So you’re not going to answer everyone’s question, but pick and choose which ones you want to answer.

NP: What I’ll do is find a friend, if I have a couple days notice, I’ll find a friend who can type at speed, that way I can just answer and the time to give the answers will become less of a factor. We should be able to get more questions answered that way.

AJM: And also, say we give ourselves and hour for this event, then you have to leave and go do something else. You are already a freeper, you can come back later and fill in some of the unanswered ones if want.

NP: Outstanding, Outstanding.

AJM: So I’ll get a hold of beginning of next week and maybe we can pick out a date.

NP: Alright Jim, thanks a lot.

AJM: It was nice making your acquantence and you have a superstar in my mind for a mentor down there with Mr. Hunter.

NP: Oh absolutely. I’ve been very people blessed in my life all the way around, all the way around.

AJM: Well good luck and we’ll talk next week.

NP: OK, thank you sir. Need to talk to Duncan again?

AJM: Yeah sure.

NP: Here ya go.

DH: Ok Jim, I’m down here now and we’re going to talk about this race.

AJM: OK. I’ll give you another call next week.

DH: OK, sounds great. And help the Gunny!

AJM: Sure will, and Vaughn as well. Good luck up in Idaho.

DH: OK, many thanks.

No, but I think Hunter was impressed with him when I asked him about west 2 years ago. So we need to ask him about him again.

The new young guns of West, Gunny Pop, Jesse Kelly in Az, joining up with some of the great freshman like Duncan D. and Chaffetz in Utah. We might just save this republic after all.

It’s time to stop being old “friends” with maggots who hate this country - no matter how much they’ve campaigned for you.

“Hey, at least he did not endorse him.”

Sorry, not good enough. All he did was join the ranks of refusing to take a stand. If he had said, I don’t like either one of them and won’t endorse either one of them, I’d respect that. He didn’t have any problem endorsing Huckabee, did he?

Well, you can look at it that way if you want. A non-endorsement, especially the way he laid it out, is pretty significant. Making sure to point out that he aligns with JD’s thinking, not McCains.

“President Hunter would have meant a very different America today.”

For sure. But LMSM picked McCain, and too many people vote for the person they see most on the boob tube, rather than do their own research (as we Hunter fans did).
