These holes are not only amazing, but some are really terrifying! The sheer scale of these holes are a reminder of just how tiny we are!

Does anyone recognize the first photo? No name or location data.
Wow! I’ve never heard of these before. You are certainly left in awe at the sight of these holes. Except of course for the last photo...of the WH - that “vermin hole” will be mended just as soon as we clean house in November!
Kimberly big hole in South Africa is the first one.

Joe Stalin attacked Finland (a subject now under discussion on FR) for the purpose of seizing the Kola Peninsula, also near Nikel Oblast, Russia.
I'd say more money and lives have been wasted proportionate to the value of the objective in Nikel Oblast, Russia than anywhere else on Earth.
Today this area is virtually devoid of population. The Skolt Sa'ami were even reduced to herding sheep because the area was irradiated with outfall from the Chernobyl event and reindeer raised here were no longer marketable.
The territory probably has more buildings than people these days thanks to the vast number of empty military barracks left behind as the Soviet, then Russian army pulled out.
Until Orthodox and Lutheran missionaries tried to Christianize the locals in the 16th/17th centuries, this part of the world got along famously without law, government, civic buildings, iron bridges, armies, police, money, reading or writing.
Everyone subsisted on seal, walrus, fish, reindeer and lingonberries!
Yesterday a young man from a nearby province in Norway (nearby in the sense of anyplace in the Sapma being "near") who grew up in Mosvik, Nord-Trøndelag ~ his name Petter Northug ~ won the 50 KM men's cross-country Olympic ski event by undertaking a sprint for the finish.
No one else has done exactly that ~ he's done it twice.
Thanks!
Only one image comes to mind.
Mirny Diamond Mine, Siberia?
